As Director of the First Year Committee, I was recently blessed with the opportunity to kick off the FYC’s first gathering, the Pumpkin Party— where first year students got the opportunity to bond over food and fun activities including pumpkin painting and kickball. While bearing a slow start, more and more individuals began to show up as the night progressed, illustrating that the abundance of food and supplies— such as nearly a hundred miniature pumpkins, fifteen pumpkin pies and eight dozen bakery goods— was just enough! The night of the event went all according to plan with minimal disruption, all thanks to the combined efforts that went into it beforehand. Leading up to October 25th, I worked diligently with Honors faculty to determine venue options, supply acquisition strategies, and to identify key deliverables and their respective dates. Furthermore, each LIA meeting was used efficiently to empower nearly twenty first-year student leaders, or fellows, across three subcommittees. These subcommittees were given a plethora of tasks ranging from graphic design of posters, tabling, crafting a catering order, strategizing how to maximize the guest experience and more. Each and every student illustrated their commitment to excellence and demonstrated an admirable level of cohesion and adaptability as deadlines were established and methods to meet them were conceived all without requiring my intervention. Thank you to all those referred to above including faculty members Kendall Smith, Marette Hahn, PhD, Ally Wright, and Claire Miller and fellows Adison Hamele, Darin Brockmeier, Jozy Kairu, Keegan Bailey, Madyson Bell, Armani Jefferson, Ellie Mohr, Joseph Paul Markowski, Paige Prentice, Rachel Straus, Catherine Varner, Gwyneth Moore, Isaiah Saldana, Jasmine Shelton, Kya Shelford, and Michael Urias. A special thanks goes to Tom, the store manager over the Sprouts at the Indian Village Shopping Center, for generously donating the pumpkins for our event upon my arrival at his store.

I recently had the opportunity to attend the National Collegiate Honors Council Harmonizing Heritage Conference in Kansas City through The Honors College at Grand Canyon University. Over three impactful days, I connected with honors students and faculty from across the country, engaging in sessions focused on themes like culture and community, unlocking potential, faith and diversity, and interdisciplinary research. I also explored student poster presentations showcasing innovative research by honors students nationwide. One of the sessions that stood out to me was "Roundtables - Faith and Diversity - Leadership in Honors." This discussion expanded my perspective on religion, beliefs, and values, emphasizing the significance of appreciating diverse viewpoints and honing the skill of active listening as a leader. The experience was both eye-opening and inspiring, offering insights I'm excited to bring back to our GCU community. Attending this conference broadened my understanding and fueled my growth as a leader. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to expand my knowledge and connect with other honors students and faculty. I'm excited to put these insights into action in my work as a student and leader.

This fall, we launched our 6th cohort of the Young Athena Leadership Development Program in The Honors College at Grand Canyon University. It is always a pleasure to serve as a panelist on the "Women in Leadership" panel for this program, which marks the halfway point in this robust 10-week curriculum/ program. Thank you, again and again, to the inspirational leaders and student ambassadors that lead and support this program semester after semester! Empowering the youth of today creates waves of change tomorrow! The Young Athena Valley of the Sun Women in Leadership panel was held last Thursday for 30 emerging leaders in The Honors College at Grand Canyon University. We were able to gather special guest speakers such as Breanna Naegeli, PhD, Dr Kristine Quade, JD, EdD, MSOD, Joseline Nyinawabera, MBA, Fanny Guerra, Monica Castaneda Ed.D., and Dr. Cindy Lopez to speak from the heart as they opened up to give insight from their own life and career experiences. Each woman on this panel was vulnerable when providing advice on how to constantly learn and adapt to achieve any goal. These leaders are courageous in their everyday lives, living authentically, and advocating for the causes that speak to their purpose like a true Athena. Having the opportunity to moderate and lead this panel was an honor. I loved being able to change the environment from a simple Q&A to a round table discussion for engagement with the youth. Thank you Dr. Lori Wieters for entrusting me and encouraging me in this endeavor! Thank you Kendall Smith for these captured moments as well!
