Look, salary will always be important to job seekers when they’re considering where to apply and whether to accept. But there’s something they actually care about more than money these days, and that’s their work-life balance. I say this as a President and CEO at Gables Search Group who talks to job seekers every day, but it’s also quantifiable in a recent poll by Randstad, the world’s biggest employment agency, which recently found that 57% of workers would simply not accept a job that would negatively impact their work-life balance, even if it paid better. What exactly does that constitute? Things like the ability to work from home at least some of the time and to set their own hours — within reason, of course. Whether or not you’re working with a recruiter to improve your prospects for hiring the right talent, take a look at these factors. Working with a recruiter can also help you really sell your benefits — including work-life balance options — to prospective employees.

“Michael, I have a passion for document management.” Is anyone else sick of hearing the word passion used in resumes and cover letters? As a recruiter for 28 years, I think I have read this word far more than my fair share of times. Sometimes it seems like everyone is driven by passion in their jobs, but in reality, I know this can’t be true. For instance, you might be good at document management. You might, in fact, have a real skill at it! And it might suit your personality to a T. But are you really passionate about it? Personally, I’d like to see this word replaced by more something more descriptive, personal and, dare I say it, true. For instance, let’s consider… I possess a deep devotion to copyediting. I have a calling for middle management. I am dutifully devoted to data entry. Or, if you’re really, truly excited about your job, consider: I have a zeal for shoe sales.

To be middle class used to mean being financially secure and comfortable — perhaps owning a nice little house and having a solid retirement plan in place. But today’s middle class does not feel that secure. According to a recent poll underwritten by the National True Cost of Living Coalition, almost two-thirds of the “middle class” experiences economic hardship and doesn’t see an end in sight. Even in a strong economy, with robust labor and housing markets, a sizable chunk of folks making 5x the poverty rate worry about how they are going to pay their bills. As a President and CEO at Gables Search Group, I obviously talk with job seekers every day seeking to make more money and secure better retirement options. While finding “the right fit” and being inspired by one’s profession are of course important factors in the decision, at the end of the day, it has to be said that many people go with the one that pays the most money and offers the best benefits.
