The recently published FAO 2024 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture report found world aquaculture production reached a new record of 130.9 million tons in 2022 🐟 🤯
The importance of aquaculture in fighting global hunger is evident, with over half of the seafood consumed globally now being produced through aquaculture. Aquaculture not only helps meet the rising global demand for protein but also ensures a consistent, sustainable supply without overexploiting natural fish stocks that other species rely on.
To continue to support aquaculture’s rising growth while simultaneously protecting wild forage fish, it’s vital that feed ingredient companies incorporate and reliably deliver sustainable ingredients to farmers.
Here are some other quick highlights from the FAO report:
🔵 In 2022, global aquaculture output exceeded wild fish catches for the first time.
🔵 500 million people rely on small-scale fisheries for their livelihoods.
🔵 By 2032, aquatic animal production is expected to grow by 10% to 205 million tonnes, with 111 million from aquaculture and 94 million from fisheries.
