A 2023 report from the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research indicates that most vegetable meal and insect meal feed samples contain PFAs levels below the detection limit, while trace amounts are present in fishmeal and fish oil. (PFAs, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances 🧪, are harmful synthetic chemicals that persist indefinitely in the environment). By supporting the growth and uptake of fishmeal and fish oil alternatives, we can offer a healthier option for ourselves and the planet 🌍 The Annual Report by the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research: https://lnkd.in/grbfWQTh To read the report’s highlights, check out the full Aquafeed.com article in the 🔗 below https://lnkd.in/dRMmnBmx #F3 #Aquaculture #futureofseafood

Exciting developments in Ghana's aquaculture 🐟🇬🇭 Fish-free feed options are on the rise in Ghana, offering more affordable and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional commercial feeds. These fish-free alternatives include algae, water hyacinth, and even manufactured ingredients like duckweed, single-cell proteins, and Artemia products. With the expansion of fish-free feed options in Ghana, farmers are bypassing corn supply chain issues, improving wastewater management, and earning extra income by selling surplus feed. An emerging campaign is pressing the Norwegian government to forbid salmon farms from using fish oil obtained from West Africa. In the push for sustainable aquaculture, attention is turning to the extraction of small (but mighty) wild forage fish from ecosystems and the effects this has on land and the communities that depend on them 🎣 There exist solutions to replace fish oil derived from wild forage fish with viable, fish-free alternatives. These fish-free feeds are ready to make an impact, provided there is scalability and transparency along the value chain 🌍 Click the 🔗 to read more about the West African fish oil issue: https://lnkd.in/ge3DrCUd

Rothamsted Research has granted Yield10 Bioscience an exclusive global, commercial license to produce omega-3 oil products from camelina plants (Camelina sativa). 🌿🔬 This is some good news for our oceans! With omega-3 oils being commercially cultivated on land, this action can help reduce society’s need to harvest fish for their omega-3s, easing pressure on biodiverse ocean ecosystems and protecting wild forage fish 🐟🐠 Click the 🔗 to read more: https://lnkd.in/dcbhcXy7 #Aquaculture #F3 #futureofseafood

We are proud of our F3 Judge, Kevin Fitzsimmons, who recently delivered a compelling presentation about the importance of new aquaculture feed ingredients to support sustainable aquaculture and global food security at the United Nations Headquarters 🇺🇳 For this year's United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of The Sea meeting, Kevin emphasized the continual strides the F3 initiative is making towards promoting sustainable aquaculture practices and reducing reliance on wild catch in fish feeds. These small but mighty wild-caught forage fish account for roughly one-third of annual global marine fish landings.
