About us

Friends Hospital is the oldest private psychiatric hospital in the United States providing psychiatric treatment to adolescents, adults, and seniors for more than 200 years. A rural oasis in an urban setting, the hospital's beautiful 100-acre campus offers a quiet refuge where healing has taken place for two centuries. In 1813, the Quakers founded Friends Hospital based on the belief that all people, even those with a mental illness, can live a “moral, ordered existence if treated with kindness, dignity and respect.” The main focus of “moral treatment” was to strengthen the mental wellness of each patient. Thus, treatment concentrated on strengthening mental health, not on curing mental illness. This was a departure from the accepted view of the time and the guiding principle on which all of the hospital’s procedures were based. Today, Friends Hospital still operates under this original mission and, using behavioral health evidence-based practices coupled with modern principles of wellness and recovery, strives to provide patients with the tools they need to understand and manage their illness in a compassionate and supportive environment. This approach has earned the facility the distinction as one of Philadelphia’s top mental health facilities and the only inpatient psychiatric hospital in Pennsylvania to achieve Top Performer on Key Quality Measures ® from The Joint Commission for four years in a row. In 2016, Friends Hospital is one of a select group of healthcare facilities in the U.S. to be named Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

Our Community Liaison, Mike St. John, was grateful to participate in the PAD (Police Assisted Diversion) Resource Fair. It's an opportunity to collaborate with other organizations and talk to people in the community about what resources are available for those that are struggling with any kind of behavioral health difficulties. PAD has done a wonderful job of helping people to get the appropriate level-of-care in situations that used to automatically end up in the justice system. Well done!

Today, the residents from our Greystone and Hillside programs released the butterflies that they watched transform over the past few weeks. The residents and Aetna, the therapy dog, were so excited to see them! Executive Director, Jenn Kuter, and her team do an amazing job keeping the residents engaged and working towards their goals. If you have a loved one that needs a long-term community residential program, please don't hesitate to call us at 215-831-3918.

Friends Hospital wishes Karen Irwin a big congratulation on her retirement! After 13 years with Friends and 25 years working in healthcare, Karen has decided to call it a career. Karen is the consummate professional and was the face of Friends Hospital for over a decade. During that time, she touched many lives including patients, colleagues and community stakeholders. She will be missed at Friends, but she truly earned the right to move to this next phase of her life, and we are sure she will continue to make an impact in everything she puts her mind to. Thank you for everything, Karen!

Last week, as part of our Juneteenth celebration, we brought in some goats for the staff to cuddle! This was a big hit with everyone. Interacting with animals has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure. They are wonderful at increasing feelings of social support and boosting people's moods!

It is #Juneteenth. A big shoutout to Steele Stevens and Greg Artis for putting together a great display so our staff could discover more about this important event in our nation's history. The Dietary Department had a fantastic spread for everyone to enjoy and it was a great day at Friends Hospital!
