"I am intimately aware of how cancer can throw a life and family off track, and I am lucky to also know the incredible impact of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center community. 10 years after I was initially diagnosed with breast cancer, I received devastating news that the cancer had spread to my lungs. I came to MSK because I needed to be in the best place for treating stage 4, or metastatic, breast cancer. From the moment I met my physician, Jasmeet Singh, MD, she made it clear that metastatic breast cancer is treatable, and there are new medical advances and reasons for hope. Since my metastatic cancer diagnosis, I’ve had many dreams come true. I’ve watched my children become teenagers. I got to drop off my son at college — a goal I’d had since I was first diagnosed. I’ve worked at a job I love, and traveled the world with my beloved husband, Bill. I walked the United Airlines NYC Half with Fred’s Team. Living with metastatic breast cancer isn’t easy, and I have now been diagnosed with leptomeningeal cancer, a challenging and rare condition in which the disease has spread to my cerebrospinal fluid. But I will always be hopeful. Throughout this incredibly difficult journey, I’m so grateful to my amazing MSK team that I call the dream team. Together, they’ve given me the best treatment as quickly as possible, and it resulted in more moments with my loved ones. Research into new treatments for stage 4 cancers like mine is underfunded, receiving on average, less than 7% of breast cancer research dollars. We must do more to find effective treatments for every person facing cancer. It takes all of us to drive this work forward, and I know that every person in the MSK community is working together to support new breakthroughs. In just the past two years, the work of MSK researchers led to the FDA approval of two new drugs to treat metastatic breast cancer. With your support, I know that we’ll keep discovering new treatments for me and others diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.
