Native plantings help water quality AND pollinators! Thanks to volunteers and our community partners, our two demonstration sites of native plantings are growing strong. Native plantings on the shore can help slow down water and allow it to soak into the ground on land. Plus, deep roots hold on to soil, reducing erosion. This helps keep excess phosphorus and sediment out of our waterways. Added benefits include looking beautiful and helping pollinators! Cows and water quality have had a bit of a rocky history, but it’s not the cow's fault. When manure is improperly handled, it can run off into our waterways, causing elevated levels of nutrients like phosphorus. When nutrient levels are high, algae blooms become more common which leads to eutrophication and fish kills. With our Farm Climate Smart program, farmers are using sustainable manure management practices like Low Disturbance Manure Application (LDMA) to keep manure in the fields and out of our water (plus LDMA helps to tone down the stink, so it’s a win-win for everyone).
