GREAT NEWS: Former German circus lioness now in our TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary 🦁🌳 Bred and born in France, lioness Manuschka was sold at only three months old. After the death of her half-brother this year, the circus family decided to hand her over to our care and stop using big cats altogether! 🎪❌ With the support of her previous owners, Manuschka voluntarily went into the transport crate without the need for anesthesia and arrived at TIERART without any complications. Unlike other big cats, lions are highly social animals and should not live alone. Once Manuschka’s health check is completed and all necessary papers are in place, she will be transferred to our FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary, where she can have contact with other lions. Due to her former owner, Manuschka now has the chance for a species-appropriate life. However, it is still legal for wild animals to be in circuses in Germany. Several countries, such as Bulgaria, France, Italy, and Sweden, have banned wild animals, or even all animals, from circuses. 🎪❌ Germany is falling behind in this matter and fails to protect animals like Manuschka from being used for entertainment and kept in insufficient conditions. ➡️🇩🇪 We call on Germany to adapt its animal welfare laws and follow the lead of many countries worldwide — ban the use of animals from circuses! #AnimalWelfare #Germany #TierartWildAnimalSanctuary #FelidaBigCatSanctuary #RuthlessTrade

Ding-dong! 🥡🛵 Ordering food is an animal welfare dilemma unless the food delivery sector makes a change. 🐾❌ Since the pandemic, the online food delivery market has grown rapidly with an expected 2.5 billion users by 2028. 📈 Furthermore, the global online meal delivery sector’s revenue has more than tripled in recent years raking in billions of euros. The power of this sector in the consumer market has inspired us to investigate the extent to which delivery brands take meat reduction, animal welfare and the increase of plant-based foods into account. 🐾 Although food delivery services are not producing food directly, they have influence to nudge consumers into making animal and climate friendly food choices! The majority of meals ordered contain animal-based ingredients. These meals come from the 92.2 billion farmed land animals used for food (meat, dairy and eggs) every year globally. 🍕 The food industry must implement clear strategies to reduce the amount of animal-based ingredients in meals; thus, supporting a lower number of animals suffering in factory farms. In addition to the vast amount of cruel practices factory farming inflicts, this type of farming is driving up greenhouse gas emissions. EVERY sector that is involved in food procurement, production and consumption plays a role in this lack of animal welfare and the associated emissions by not demanding a change‼️ Unfortunately, not even one of the food delivery brands are advocating for animal-welfare nor do they have clear meat reducing strategies in place resulting with overall low scores. We are disappointed, but hopeful that you can convince them to do better in the future. Signal the importance of meat reduction and animal welfare and tag the brand you use for food deliveries. A large portion of many peoples' days are spent at work; in fact, the average person will spend 90,000 hours at work over a lifetime. 🏢 That is a lot of food and drink consumed during working hours. The true environmental cost of a burger... 🍔 Let's uncover the hidden impacts of factory farming — from greenhouse gas emissions to water consumption and habitat destruction. Producing just 1 kilogram of beef requires around 15,000 litres of water annually! 🥩❌💦 Additionally, while a single cow emits 2-3 tons of methane directly, total emissions can reach up to 7 tons each year! 🐄 The reality is that the more meat we eat, the higher the environmental impact and cost, but we can make a difference! A beacon of hope in the eyes of strays in Bulgaria 🐕 Dr. Slavea Ivanova has worked as a veterinarian at our Stray Animal Care project since 2018 helping animals in need. 🐈⬛ Slavea mentioned that during her time with us dog Tropcho's story stood out to her. He was hit by a car with a severe brain injury. The first week his condition was critical and he was unconscious for three days. Yet, in the end he pulled through although he cannot see well with his right eye and still has a wobbly walk from being hit by the car. 🚗 Luckily, help for Tropcho came just in time and he got a second chance in life. Unfortunately, stories such as Tropcho’s are not uncommon, especially in areas with so many strays. Therefore, Slavea focuses on curbing the number of strays in the country with CNVR (Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return). 💉 Together with her team and colleagues, she can reach between 20 – 30 sterilisations per day. Even after seeing so many animals suffering, Slavea does not lose hope. She believes that every person can make an impact and if you change one person’s mind when it comes to strays, “they will spread the good and have an impact on others and just like that the whole nation’s mindset can be changed.” 🐾 Slavea has achieved so much in Bulgaria and we could not be prouder! #StrayAnimalCare #AnimalWelfare #StrayAnimal #CNVR

Our scientific approach to animal welfare issues 🐑 We are proud to share that three of our dedicated team members participated in the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare International Animal Welfare Conference 2024, in Porto. This prestigious event brought together leading experts in animal welfare to share research, insights, and innovations to advance animal welfare science. 🐾 Our colleagues presented some of the work we have been developing at FOUR PAWS: 🧵 Daniela Haager, Animal Welfare Scientist, with a talk on assessing animal welfare risks in fibre producing animals; 🐻 Elena Stagni, Animal Behaviour and Welfare Specialist, with a poster about a locomotion and mobility assessment for brown bears, which is one of the measures included in the BearWell, a welfare assessment protocol for brown bears under human care; 🦁 Sara Sequeira, Animal Welfare Scientist, with a poster about the CatWell, a welfare assessment protocol for lions and tigers under human care. Presenting our work to the scientific community led to meaningful discussions and highlighted FOUR PAWS’ ongoing commitment to advancing animal welfare globally. 🌍 We are proud of our colleagues and look forward to continuing our work and making a positive impact on animal welfare! Our colleagues' documentary debut in “Dethroned”🎥👑🦁 The premiere in Vienna was a great success with many in attendance! Opening the event was our CEO, Josef Pfabigan, with a speech before stakeholders and supporters took to their seats. Viewers watched as big cats roared in outrage across the world at the atrocities done to them by humans.🌎 The film focuses on humans' exploitation of big cats for entertainment, traditional medicine, farming and more. The commercial trade must come to an end! This unquestionable message strikes the hearts of any who watch the story unfold. After the viewing, there was a live panel discussion between Aaron Gekoski, the film’s presenter, Will Foster-Grundy, the film’s director, and our Head of Wild Animals in Trade, Vanessa Amoroso.
