Many thanks to the Foresight Institute and Open Lunar Foundation for organizing this event! I was also delighted to join the amazing founder of Astreas, Shahreen Reza, on the first day of the Foresight event. Per usual, it was a delicious conversation about chocolate, innovation, and space. Also grateful to lead the conversation on Synthetic Biology Off Earth. It’s always great to spark conversations with people across different industries who work toward building a better future for our communities, for our planet, and for generations to come…wherever we call home. Stay tuned - I’ll be sharing more thoughts about this event soon! #spaceexploration #space #biotechnology #syntheticbiology
Last week, the Foresight Institute and Open Lunar Foundation hosted the "Space Futures and Space Governance Workshop", inviting Shahreen Reza, Astreas CEO, and Tiffany Vora, VP of Innovation Partnerships at Explore Mars Inc., to contribute their expertise. This gathering of industry leaders provided a meaningful platform to explore the future of space technologies and governance. 🚀 Shahreen Reza shared her perspective on rethinking nutrition in space, focusing on how improving cognitive performance can support astronauts during long missions. 🔬 Tiffany Vora offered insights on leveraging biology as technology to enable human survival and success in space. 💬 Shahreen Reza: “Thanks to Dane Gobel for inviting #Astreas to this fantastic workshop. It was a brilliant opportunity to meet fellow space innovators and ‘astropreneurs’ as we learn to navigate the challenges of deep space exploration.” Astreas continues building on its mission to enhance human performance with advanced nutritional science. #SpaceInnovation #CognitivePerformance #PrecisionNutrition #Astreas #SpaceFood

At our Longevity Workshop in collaboration with the Longevity Biotech Fellowship, Jean Hebert (Albert Einstein College of Medicine) discussed brain tissue replacement as a promising approach to combat aging. He highlighted two key components: removing old brain tissue without losing its information content and adding new tissue. Hebert mentioned clinical examples, such as slow-growing benign tumors, where significant portions of the brain were removed without impairing speech or personality, thanks to the brain’s plasticity. Hebert explained that adding young precursor cells into the brain had been shown to integrate with adult brain tissue, though the issue was that these grafts lacked normal structure and functionality. His research addressed this by engineering structured tissue that could develop normally and connect with the brain. The talk also touched on other approaches to brain tissue replacement, such as growing fetal-like brain tissue in a dish or using chimeric models. While controversial, human fetal tissue has been successfully used for Parkinson's treatments since the 1980s. Hebert concluded by emphasizing the importance of replacing both brain and body tissue to effectively beat aging, with stroke recovery as a potential first clinical application. He advocated for progressive tissue replacement that would preserve self-identity without disrupting brain function, noting that the FDA and government were eager to fund research in this area.
