It’s hard to put into word my experience this week: being in DC as the president began his long farewell & passed the baton to the next generation. The honor of being asked to speak on Capitol Hill alongside some of my food system sheroes: Danielle Nierenberg (who’s voice for the last decade is a top reason why I’m on my current path), Jean Buzby, leading Food Loss & Waste efforts at USDA & Rep. Chellie Pingree, who has been an unwavering voice for building our future of food today. Bernard Pollack, Dani & the Food Tank team once again did an exceptional job of filling the room with changemakers & curating a juicy conversation about the progress we have to celebrate and the opportunities still ahead. It was a joy to share the mic with emerging leaders like Regina (Anderson) Harmon, Food Recovery Network & Sophia Adelle, The Farmlink Project, UFA members like Steven Jennings, Ahold Delhaize. As an opening, Rep. Ayanna Pressley gave us “permission to affirm the dream: what would it look like for everyone to have their basic needs met” when 1 in 8 Americans, including 13 million children are food insecure. Rep. Jim McGovern closed with the call to be “impatient & persistent, think big & bold because food is a fundamental human right.” The time is now: food loss & waste is such an impactful piece of the climate crisis & a multi-system solution - one step at a time, let’s do this together, folks! Congrats to Food Tank for hosting a standing room only event on Capitol Hill today covering food access, food is medicine, and food waste, with visits from Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Chellie Pingree, and of course, Rep. Jim McGovern. Great to see so many friends and colleagues, especially those who were panelists, and advance such an important conversation.
