Our mission is to improve the quality of life and the health of individuals with food allergies.

About us

FARE works on behalf of the 33 million Americans who have food allergies, including all those at risk for life-threatening anaphylaxis. This potentially deadly disease affects 1 in every 13 children in the United States – or roughly 2 in every classroom. FARE was formed in 2012 as the result of a merger between the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network and the Food Allergy Initiative. FARE’s mission is to improve the quality of LIFE and the HEALTH of individuals with food allergies, and to provide them HOPE through the promise of new treatments. We do this by funding providing evidence-based education and resources, undertaking advocacy at all levels of government, increasing awareness of food allergy as potentially life-threatening and a growing public health issue and by investing in world-class research that advances treatment and understanding of the disease. Last week, the FDA issued a warning letter to Bimbo Bakeries USA. The FDA's "constituent update" described that: "...during two inspections in late 2023, FDA found that some of the company’s bakery products included ingredients that are or contain major food allergens on their labels, but those ingredients were not included in the product formulations."   FARE released a two-part comment in response from Sung Poblete, PhD, RN, CEO of FARE and Robert Earl, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs: "We thank FDA for its efforts to protect the food allergy community. Just as FARE finds the practice of intentionally adding sesame flour to avoid thorough cleaning or segregating lines to be an act of malicious compliance, including sesame and other food allergens in an ingredient list and ‘Contains statement’ also does a disservice to those with food allergies. Our community relies on accurate product labeling for their health and safety and these findings about Bimbo Bakeries’ products undermine their trust and further limit choices." - Robert Earl, MPH, RDN, FAND, Vice President of Regulatory Affair "Given the size and reach of Bimbo Bakeries to American consumers, FARE expects better. Losing the food allergy community's respect also extends to the restaurants and institutions that buy their products, beyond retail packaged products. The food allergy community shouldn’t have to deserve less.” - Sung Poblete, PhD, RN, CEO of FARE   Associated Press reporter, JoNel Aleccia broke the story: https://lnkd.in/gkSkETvg

When my son was not even 4 months old, we introduced baby formula made from cows milk. He drank 2 ounces before stopping and suddenly having a look of complete dread come over his face. I had no idea a baby that young could make such an expression. He then began reacting severely to the formula and we rushed to the hospital where we learned he was suffering an anaphylactic reaction. An hour after being treated, his body erupted in full body hives and he needed a second round of epinephrine. Since then, he’s developed allergies to egg, tree nuts, and mustard in addition to dairy. Living life with a child with multiple food allergies is extremely challenging at times as kids are always putting things in their mouths, and it can be difficult to think of what to feed your family. We’ve been able to manage our sons allergies pretty well, and while he’s gotten older and is gaining more understanding of his allergens, it’s also gotten harder in many ways from feeling left out sometimes to gaining more independence. I started posting about our journey online to maybe help others who might be going through something similar, but the community I’ve found has actually helped me so much more than I could’ve imagined. I’ve loved sharing about our favorite recipes, tips, and the ups and downs of food allergy life. Submit your story for a chance to be featured on an upcoming #FARESundayStory: https://bit.ly/3WNio3g

Great news! 🎉 Today, epinephrine nasal spray, EURneffy, was recommended for approval in the EU! FARE is pleased to share this news because a needle-free method for epinephrine delivery is a huge win for the food allergy community. The more than 33 million people in the US with the disease of food allergy are anxious to have the same choices for epinephrine delivery. We celebrate this win for the food allergy community in the EU and we hope to be able to celebrate neffy’s availability in the US very soon, because patients can’t wait for this life-saving treatment option. https://lnkd.in/eg4tXuMT #foodallergyawareness #foodallergy #epinephrine

Statement from Sung Poblete, PhD, RN, CEO of FARE on Mars' new campaign to increase consumption of Snickers bars on flights: "Mars is igniting a tinderbox of potential dangers for food allergy patients with its new Snickers bar campaign. An airplane already represents a heightened risk for food allergy patients, with no access to emergency care, trained medical personnel, or life-saving epinephrine autoinjectors. Added to that, flight attendants are not trained to recognize anaphylaxis, and often are unaware that a reaction is a life-threatening emergency. FARE urges Mars to abandon this campaign so that you don't further endanger the lives of the more than 33 million people in the US with the disease of food allergy. This campaign is more than tone deaf, it could potentially be deadly." Lianne Mandelbaum https://lnkd.in/eFTUQB5D

"As a little person I recall always staying away from peanuts. Initially the smell would irritate my throat and as I got older the symptoms progressed into a full allergic reaction. I few years ago I had a series of reactions that required emergency medical intervention. I was at my breaking point and decided to have an allergy test done. The test revealed I had a peanut, crab, shrimp and, pet allergy. Im what you would consider a “Foodie” so when I started a food blog centered around eating tips, food safety because my inspiration. The challenges of having severe food allergies can feel crippling at times. You ask a lot of questions while dining out. You don’t want to be the person who gives the restaurant a hard time, but you have to know what’s in the food. You can never just grab your keys and walk out the door. You will need you remember your Epipen. You may ask yourself often “why me”!!! But you accept this is your life and surround yourself with people that don’t mind sacrificing a few items on the menu to keep you safe." -Chanel Britt Submit your story for a chance to be featured on an upcoming #FARESundayStory: https://bit.ly/3WNio3g

There's no emergency room at 30,000 ft above ground. Jack Fowler faced a terrifying ordeal on an Emirates flight. Despite warning the crew twice about his severe nut allergy, he was served a dish containing cashews, leading to a severe allergic reaction mid-air. With oxygen, an EpiPen, and a rush to the hospital upon landing, Jack is questioning how airlines handle food allergies. This should never happen to anyone. #foodallergyawareness https://bit.ly/45BbiBd

This is Andrew, age 6. We knew Andrew was special since the day he was born. He started out very fussy and with eczema all over him. Little did we know he was allergic to the formula we were giving him. He started solids and was doing great! He tried Mac and Cheese blend and it quickly went south. We had to call an ambulance and his sats were in the 60s We found out he was very allergic to eggs, milk, wheat, and all nuts. This year was his first year in big school(Kindergarten )and he did wonderful! He only eats what mom or dad packs him for school and the school follows our 504 plan. Andrew can tell you everything he is allergic to and what he can and can not have. We often have talks about what would happen to him if he were to have an allergic reaction because he is very cautious and curious. It has been about 4 years since he has had any type of reaction because we are so cautious. He does not eat at any restaurants! Andrew says he likes his allergies because they make him special!" -Andrew Dare Submit your story for a chance to be featured on an upcoming #FARESundayStory: https://bit.ly/3WNio3g
