We always knew our bass were special here in Florida! Now everyone else does too. Based on genetic studies, the American Fisheries Society established the Florida bass as a separate species from the largemouth bass. This means that in most of Florida (except the western Panhandle) what used to be called a "largemouth bass" is now called a "Florida bass." Thanks, Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, for the good news! Read more here:

Dogs are in the fight to detect invasive species, and now is the time for funding these important initiatives.
Man’s best friend can be trained to detect invasive pests—such as Japanese beetle larvae, giant African snails, spotted lanternfly egg masses, or hidden agricultural products that can carry invasive plant pests and pathogens. Submit your detector dog inspection suggestion for FY25 Plant Protection Act Section 7721 funding at https://lnkd.in/gJ5g6z7G

Conservation involves lots of hard choices, many of them controversial! Just ask U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as they consider killing large numbers of one owl to try and save another one. No easy answers here.

So hermit crabs are not actually hermits? Who knew? Check out this cool video on hermit crabs.
This week's #SpeciesSpotlight is the Hermit Crab 🦀 - Hermit crabs make their home inside of empty discarded shells. They malt their exoskeleton to grow and as they grow they ‘upgrade’ to bigger and bigger shells - If a hermit crab likes the look of another hermit crab’s shell, it might try and steal it. It’ll knock on the shell it wants, drawing the owner out and then they'll fight until one of them is victorious! - Hermit crabs aren’t actually hermits. They dislike solitude and can live in colonies of up to 100 or more - Hermit crabs communicate by chirping. Their high pitch chirps sound like a bit like a frog

Frog saunas that might save a species. Amazing! What will they think of next?
A fungus is killing frogs. Homemade saunas might save them, scientists say.

And you thought the Supreme Court’s decision in SEC v. Jarkesy, No. 22-859 (U.S. June 27, 2024) had nothing to do with animal law! Think again, and check out this blog post by John M. Simpson at Duane Morris LLP about how the Supreme Court has severely impacted the USDA’s power to assess civil penalties under the Animal Welfare Act.
