🌎💗Earlier this May, we were delighted to host an event that celebrated the new #UrbanAgricultural initiative created by the USDA! 🎉🌳 🏙️🏡We’re passionate about the growth of urban agriculture, and the vital resources these organizations provide for metropolitan areas. During this event we celebrated the launch of two upcoming #UrbanService centers in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. Both centers will be staffed by employees of the USDA Farm Service Agency and the Nrcs-National Resource Conservation Service. These knowledgeable and skilled organizations will help connect urban farmers with farm loan, conservation, disaster recovery assistance, and risk management programs. 🧑🌾🥕 ✨🍅We’re truly grateful to be a part of the #UrbanFarm community! ☀️🏡Our summer programs are in full swing, and this week we wanted to highlight our #Youth from HandsOn Bay Area. Through their HandsOnTomorrow program, they send young leaders across the Bay Area to lead projects and give back to their communities. We’ve been incredibly grateful to host these inspiring youth for the past few years. 🎉🌳 🌸🌈This summer, our HandsOnTomorrow youth led an exciting project for our chickens and local birds. They built  nesting boxes for our chickens and birdhouses for our feathered neighbors. Our birds are super excited for their cozy new homes! 🐣🌿 🫶📚Big shout out to HandsOn Bay Area for being a part of our #Mission of educating youth about #CommunityFarming and healthy food habits! 🏡💗This week’s Decades of Harvest post encompasses a challenging and impressive year for the farm! The pandemic in 2020 hit the farm hard, limiting the amount of #Volunteers we could host and taking away the #Community space we had built. With these hardships, we looked at our #Mission and decided to deepen our focus on feeding our community, teaching the #NextGeneration about farm to table processes, and expanding to different demographics. 👏🌸 🎉🌳We were able to instill new positive programs on the farm in 2020, including our beloved Youth Program and Black Organic Farm. Big shout out to FACES SF for being our first partner in providing us a youth program about gardening. These two programs are still going strong and expanding today, and we are deeply thankful for all of the #HardWork and #Dedication our volunteers and partners have put into them. We also deepened our mission of #Inclusivity and #Diversity by changing our name from “Florence Fang Asian Community Garden” to “Florence Fang Community Farm.” 🫶☀️ 🥕🍃2020 was a huge year for us, and we couldn’t be more thankful for the teams that keep these new programs alive! ☀️🌸This past week we wrapped up our #Summer #YouthGroup by making fresh kale chips and coleslaw! This summer, we hosted youth from Bert Hsu Academy and Vision Academy. These bright kiddos were mentored by our Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church interns, Jordan and Melanie, and one of our farm’s interns from Anne Saxelby Legacy Fund, Katalina Huazano. The youth were able to pick their own crops, plant them, take care of them, harvest them, and prepare meals. 🫶🏡 🥕🌳For the past couple of months, our youth group took seeds from farm to table, learning farming techniques and healthy food options. One of our youth, Luis, said “I learned so much about how food starts as seeds and turns into tasty vegetables. It's really fun to see them grow every day! I'm super excited to take my lettuce plant home and help it grow. I can't wait to show my family and grow our own food together. They'll be so happy with me!" Additionally, they were able to hang out with our chickens. They even named a few of them, including our beloved chicken, Gaby!🐣🌿 💗🌈 Big shout out to San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Their Families (DCYF) for helping us keep our Summer Youth Program #Enriching and fun! 🫶🎉We’re excited to share our next milestone for our Decades of Harvest campaign! In 2019, we took a significant step by creating a #Bioswale on the farm. A bioswale is a shallow trench designed to collect and filter stormwater, an essential feature for rainy San Francisco. This addition helps us manage rainwater while introducing a variety of new amphibious plants to the farm. We even released some frogs in the bioswale! 🐸💧 🌧️🏡Over the years, our bioswale has played a crucial role in rainwater control! 🎉🌸We’re thrilled to highlight one of our wonderful #Partnerships this week! Nkarta, Inc. has been volunteering with us for the past year, making a significant #Impact on our farm’s groundskeeping, chicken coop, harvesting, and weeding. They learned about us through Life Science Cares Bay Area and have continued to support us ever since. 🫶🌳 ☀️🏡Just this past month they came by to help with mulching and upgrading our chicken coop. Their dedication improved our chickens’ bedding and beautified the area. Our feathered friends have been delighted to be resting in their refreshed, cozy home! 🐣🌿 💗👏A big shoutout to Joy T for bringing Nkarta to the farm! 🎉🏡We’re back with another milestone in our Decades of Harvest campaign! This week, we want to highlight our bees’ arrival to the farm in 2018. Establishing #BeeHives on the farm have allowed us to harvest an abundant supply of fresh #Honey. The bees have also played a vital part in pollinating our flowers and veggies, helping our farm #Thrive. 🐝🍯 🫶🌳Over the past six years, we’ve kept our bees healthy and happy with the invaluable support of the SF Beekeepers Association. Huge shout out to Mark Carlson and Lindsay Wilson for their excellent work in teaching our volunteers and farmers about honey production and harvesting. 💗🌸 🐝🌷Our farm’s vibrancy is thanks to our wonderful bees! The Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood is defined as a #FoodDesert, where access to a variety of fresh and healthy produce is extremely limited. At Florence Fang Community Farm, we’re passionate about #FoodSecurity and #FoodSovereignty. It’s important to understand these concepts in order to create change in our communities: - Food security refers to the direct availability, accessibility, and affordability of food for all individuals.  - Alternatively, food sovereignty goes past accessibility by focusing on communities’ ability to control their own food systems, helping them take control of production, distribution, and the variety of culturally-appropriate and preferred produce. At the farm, we value food security through our weekly Saturday Food Pantry and #Partnership with SF-Marin Food Bank. Additionally, we also prioritize food sovereignty with our #Community and #PublicAccess farm. We encourage all members in our community to grow the veggies they cherish. 🌈🌸With summer in full swing, we’ve been upgrading the farm to help elevate our ability to produce vibrant veggies! This progress wouldn’t be possible without our amazing #Volunteer groups, such as Taiwanese American Professionals - San Francisco (TAPSF). This organization promotes Taiwanese-American identity across the Bay Area by hosting community service events and partnering with local organizations. 🇹🇼🫶 🏡🌳We’ve had the pleasure of partnering with TAPSF since before the farm began, where they helped us plan various AsianWeek Database Project events. Most recently, TAPSF volunteers enhanced our vegetable beds by adding support poles for nets, protecting transplanted sprouts. 💧🌱 🎉☀️Huge shout out to Tiffany for making this connection happen! 🎉🏡We’re excited to share another milestone for our #DecadesofHarvests campaign! With our foundational infrastructure in place and our first crops thriving, we launched our Food Pantry in 2016, guided and supported by one of our founders, Johnny Chen. Located in a #FoodDesert, our mission is to supply the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood with fresh produce, and our Saturday Food Pantry has helped us achieve this goal. 🥬🍅 🧑🌾🥕Every Saturday morning we provide families with #FreshProduce from our farm and other nutritional goods from our friends at SF-Marin Food Bank. We’ve been able to serve over 275 families, helping these 700 individuals access healthy, vibrant produce. 🫶🌳 👏💗Our Food Pantry has been a massive #Success, and we’re grateful for the farm volunteers and partners who have supported this initiative!
