Mrs. Johnson* was an 86 year old woman with severe Dementia. She was in a long-term care facility and was unfortunately regressing. Mrs. Johnson's dementia caused her severe agitation which led to aggressiveness and complete unwillingness to participate in therapy. Unfortunately, she went from walking, to a wheelchair due to the lack of muscular movement. Enter Mia*, Mrs. Johnson's OT. Mia was pained by Mrs. Johnson's regression and tried some creative ways to motivate her. Through talking with Mrs. Johnson, Mia learned that she loved Motown music from back in the 80’s. Mia connected with a music therapist who happily agreed to join her session and play live Motown music. The moment that music started playing, Mrs. Johnson was a different person. She was vibrant, happy and full of life! Due to her dementia, she thought it was 1982 and she was at the club dancing! And so, Mia turned Mrs. Johnson's therapy sessions into Motown dancing sessions. She would walk into Mrs. Johnsons room, tell her that they were going to the club and request Mrs. Johnson get dressed. Lo and behold, she got herself dressed! (something she would never otherwise do!) Mia would then bring Mrs. Johnson to the gym where the music therapist would play Motown and they would dance together. Through dancing, Mia could evaluate Mrs. Johnson's gait (she was walking!), as well as the range of motion in her arms as she was full-fledged dancing! The transformation was incredible! All because a dedicated therapist took the time to talk to the patient, and learn what she loved. Therapist = heroes 💗

Therapists juggle many roles. Aside from giving therapy, rehab therapists often incorporate principles of psychology into their practice. Whether long-term patients or patients straight out of the hospital, sometimes a patient is simply not interested in therapy. Maybe they’re tired, or just not in the mood. Perhaps they’re in pain. Whatever the reason, as rehab therapists, we can dial in on what's bothering them and offer encouragement or support, making the session easier for them. Better yet, we can get creative and make the session exciting for them. Maybe music would lift their spirits or a quick FaceTime call to a family member. Perhaps an outdoor activity or some pets would do the trick. Whatever the case, we at @Flagstar Rehab salute all rehab therapists for their outstanding dedication commitment, and yes, psychology work 😉 #therapy #occupationaltherapy #physicaltherapy #healthcare
