" When I can connect with my patients as a person, on a very human level, it helps in so many ways", shared Dominque Benoit, a dedicated COTA of 13 years. “ When I would start a new patient, the first session would be just getting to know them. - 👉 Where were they from? 👉 What family did they have? 👉 What was their life like before therapy? 👉 What did they enjoy? And perhaps most importantly: 👉 What were their goals? What did they want to accomplish in therapy? Alex shared advice for rehab therapists: "Get to know your patients, know their likes and dislikes, customer service goes a long way. Unfortunately, we don’t meet people at their best but we get them back to it."

As rehab therapists, we sometimes encounter patients who are not at their best. Pain, frustration, and the emotional toll of recovery can make interactions challenging. It’s easy to get caught up in the clinical side of treatment and forget the human side of care. But here’s the truth: getting to know your patients beyond their symptoms can make a world of difference. 🤕 Pain can bring out the worst in people, and many patients may come across as difficult or uncooperative. This isn’t a reflection of who they are — it’s a reflection of what they’re going through. 🔑 By taking the time to understand their fears, frustrations, and motivations, we build trust. And with trust, comes collaboration. Patients feel heard, seen, and valued, which leads to better outcomes. 💪 A strong therapist-patient relationship helps patients stay committed to the journey, even on the toughest days. It’s not always easy, but making the effort to connect with your patients — beyond their pain — creates a supportive environment where real healing can happen. 💖
