Fewer people are answering the call of the wild. The OIA reported American outdoor recreation grew 4.1%, reaching a record 175M participants in 2023. Raising concerns, first-timers aren’t sticking with it. • The average number of outings per year fell 11.4% YoY, from 70.5 to 62.5. • Core recreators (very frequent participants) fell from 99.4M in ’19 to 88.4M last year. • The core cohort comprises <15% of all participants. Chronically stressed and stuck inside, too many people are missing out on much-needed adventure.

High-tech behavior change is taking shape. In the wake of physician shortages, health and fitness companies are doubling down on AI as an answer. • Ariana Huffington and Sam Altman announced Thrive AI Health, a joint company developing an AI health coach to help Americans manage and reverse chronic disease. • ŌURA is piloting Oura Advisor, an AI wellness coach designed to give tips, answer questions, and add context to the ring’s data. • For virtual PT guidance, Sword Health debuted a “human-like” AI bot named Phoenix. • Focused on fitness, WHOOP unveiled an AI coach last year. Elsewhere, Apple is still plotting its own robo-advisor to round out its ecosystem. Democratizing reliable advice, AI coaches aim to counteract negative social determinants of health, and leverage behavior-change science for better outcomes. But, TBD whether algorithms can crack the biopsychosocial code of human health.
