Eliminating barriers. Inspiring young minds.
About us
Education transforms lives. First Book is building a world where every child has access to a quality education. We work to remove barriers to education and level the playing field for kids in need. At the heart of our work are the 575,000 members of the First Book Network, the largest online community of individual educators, professionals and volunteers dedicated to supporting children in need across North America. This Network is the key to creating systemic change. Through our research arm, First Book Research & Insights, we conduct studies that aggregate their voices to identify barriers to equitable education and inform strategic solutions. To address their needs, we provide free and low-cost books, resources, and access to leading experts through the First Book Marketplace, which uses aggregated buying power to support this underserved community. Founded in Washington D.C. in 1992 as a nonprofit social enterprise, First Book is dedicated to eliminating barriers to learning and inspiring young minds. I can't believe it's already Back to School time! Our Kendra Scott Foundation Yellow Library program is committed to placing Yellow Libraries in Title I elementary schools nationwide, focusing on accessibility to new, diverse, bilingual, and multicultural books, ensuring that every student can see themselves reflected in their reading materials. To date, KSF has launched 11 KSF Yellow Libraries, benefiting 7,000 students across the US, with 15 more planned for 2024. To honor the ongoing relationship between the schools and KSF, the KSF Yellow Libraries program teamed up with First Book last Thursday to distribute 5,000 free, high-quality books to over 600 students at Best Elementary school in Houston. Fantastic event to celebrate our kiddos as they head back! Do you work with students in Title I-eligible schools, military, or tribal schools? Are you passionate about empowering young people to take action on issues they care about? The Time for Change Youth Challenge is an incredible opportunity for K-12 students to submit their ideas for projects that can make a real difference in their schools and communities. At First Book, we believe that every student—regardless of age, background, or zip code—has the power to create positive change. Teachers, librarians, afterschool program leaders, and community leaders are crucial in unlocking this potential in the students they serve. The Challenge is open now through January 30th, and grand prize winners will receive $1,000 or more to bring their ideas to life. We’re excited to support the next generation of leaders and innovators. If you’re an educator or community leader, we encourage you to share this opportunity with your students or support them in applying. Learn more about the Challenge here. - https://lnkd.in/eWZMHDdF #Education #YouthLeadership #Changemakers #TFCYouthChallenge Ashoka

Voting is now open for SXSW #PanelPicker Community! We would be so grateful if you took a moment and cast your vote for Book Harvest's proposed #SXSWEDU session, "If We Build It, They Will Read: Igniting Literacy from Birth," featuring our CEO Kyle Zimmer! If chosen, the panel will present a compelling case for a comprehensive early literacy system-of-care that begins at birth and continues throughout a child’s first decade. It is crucial that all children have access to books that serve as both windows and mirrors. Kids who see their own experiences reflected in books gain self-confidence, while reading about experiences that differ from their own helps them develop healthy curiosity and empathy. 🌍✨ In this Early Learning Nation article by Paula Willey, a Baltimore-based librarian and First Book manager, she highlights the growing importance of diverse books in helping kids see themselves and others in the world around them. Along with her insights, you’ll find a curated list of must-read titles that can spark self-confidence and empathy in young readers. 📚 Let’s make sure every child can find their reflection and learn about others through the stories we share. Explore these wonderful books and read the full article here. - https://bit.ly/3WWZ7vZ #DiverseBooks #InclusiveEducation #RepresentationMatters #WindowsandMirrors
