Mental Health Care
Building a new mental healthcare system that everyone can access.
About us
Headway is building a new mental healthcare system that everyone can access making it easy for therapists to accept insurance and scale their practice. 1 in 4 people in the US have a treatable mental health condition, but the vast majority do not get the care they need. The primary reason is cost: the majority of therapists do not accept insurance, meaning paying for therapy is prohibitively expensive for prospective patients. This is where we got our start – Headway has built the first software-enabled network of therapists who accept health insurance, making it easy for therapists to grow their practices, and possible for patients to find quality care they can afford. Headway was founded in 2019 and are now powering 500,000 appointments per month. To scale its vision, Headway has raised over $225 million in funding from a16z (Andreessen Horowitz), Thrive, Accel, and GV (formerly Google Ventures), Spark Capital, Health Care Service Corporation. Join us, and make an impact We believe a team's strength is in its people, and we cannot achieve this mission without a team that reflects the diversity of this problem - across race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, national origin, religion, family status, disability, military status, and experience. Headway employees work remotely across the US, with the option to work from our NYC HQ. Headway is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, Headway will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided with reasonable accommodations. If reasonable accommodation is needed to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and/or to receive other benefits and privileges of employment, please contact [email protected].

We’re proud to announce our expansion to Medicare Advantage and Medicaid, leveraging our recent $100 million in Series D funding. This marks a key step toward realizing our mission to build a new mental healthcare system that everyone can access. One in four people with Medicare and one in three people with Medicaid are living with a mental health condition. Yet, the vast majority of them can’t get care because it can be difficult for clinicians to accept patients from these plans. We’re here to change that. As #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth comes to a close, our Founder & CEO Andrew Adams penned some thoughts on how to solve the system’s challenges for patients like him – by putting providers at the center. Read Andrew’s piece below:
Breaking down affordability and accessibility barriers in mental health care is personal to me. I was once a patient who couldn’t find in-network care, like the 67% of Americans who have a diagnosed condition but aren’t able to access treatment. This struggle highlighted a crucial truth: the key to helping patients is to prioritize and empower mental health providers. As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month and look to the future, it’s more important than ever to recognize providers as the center of the solution. Read my thoughts on how we can usher in equitable, accessible, and effective mental health care for everyone by investing in providers:

Thanks to Future of Mental Healthcare Summit for having us as we work to build a new mental health care system everyone can access!
It was a privilege to spend the morning focused on how to transform mental health care to be more equitable and accessible for all. At Headway, we believe it starts by investing in therapists and psychiatrists. Today we make it easy for 30,000 clinicians – more than 40% of whom are people of color – to accept insurance, and for patients to find a great in-network provider who meets their preferences and reflects their local community. Thank you to Future of Mental Healthcare: East for having us, and to the rest of my fellow panelists for the discussion. Merrill Friedman, John Q. Young, MD, MPP, PhD, Suzanne Kunis, Andrew Sassani M.D., John MacPhee (thanks for the 📷 Dylan Ross, PhD!)

“‘It’s not that the providers don’t want to accept insurance. It’s that they can’t when they are a solo provider, which overwhelmingly, about 80% are,' Olivia Millard Davis said. 'They don’t have the back office staff to handle dealing with insurance. So we do all of that through the platform.’ To help aid Headway’s national expansion efforts, the company is building new technology to support mental health providers licensed in multiple states who can provide care across state lines. Headway works with in-person and virtual providers. 'It’s a balance of wanting to ensure clinicians can practice multiple markets and ensure continuity of care. We often hear about patients that move from one state to another and want to stay with their provider but aren’t able to because they moved.’" Thanks to Laura Lovett at Behavioral Health Business for helping us share the work we’re doing across all 50 states and D.C. to get people the best mental health care for them.

We’re excited to share that Headway is now serving all 50 states and D.C., making it easy for millions of people to see a therapist or psychiatrist who accepts their insurance. In a post-pandemic world, it’s more important than ever for people to get care in the way that’s best for them — whether that’s in-person in their community, virtual, or a hybrid of both. This expansion is another step in making this possible for individuals across the nation. We’re proud to work with 27,000 providers and more than 25 health plans across the US. Ghost networks are a persistent problem in mental health care. Headway exists to fix this systemwide challenge at its core. We believe that making it easy for providers to actively practice in-network is critically important. By enabling providers to make this choice, health plans can have active networks and gather data that helps members get care. Thanks to Morgan Gonzales at Behavioral Health Business for talking with us about our solution to root out these deep challenges and build a new mental health care system everyone can access.
