“Ocean Souls” is not just a documentary; it’s an underwater odyssey that will leave you awe-inspired and deeply connected to the ocean and its inhabitants. Cetaceans, those majestic creatures of the deep blue, have graced our planet for 50 million years, making them one of the most ancient mammal species to roam the Earth. In their remarkable evolutionary journey, they have evolved to become one of the most graceful and intelligent beings in the animal kingdom. Producer Philip Hamilton uncovers the parallel intelligence that cetaceans share with us, revealing a profound connection between our species and these enigmatic creatures. Filmed over four seasons, directors McKenna Asakawa and @Brady Holden introduce viewers to the unsung heroes of conservation: seed collectors, farmers, researchers, and land managers. These dedicated individuals are on a mission to increase the supply of native seeds, meeting the ever-growing demand for ecological restoration.  With climate-related disasters increasing in intensity and frequency, land managers are facing a monumental task. They must restore lands damaged by wildfires, floods, and human development. The scale is staggering, with the United Nations estimating the restoration of 350 million hectares of degraded land globally. To achieve this, we require a staggering 1.9 billion tons of seed. Nancy Shaw, U.S. Forest Service scientist emeritus and SER-INSR board member, eloquently captures the essence of this endeavor: “Plants and their seeds are chronically overlooked, yet they underpin all life. They’re essential for our survival, well-being, and inspiration.” For more information check out - https://lnkd.in/g4d3GPib  #conservation #seeds #documentary #landmanagement #environment #climate

Great post by Climate Scientist Katharine Hayhoe: "Compelling climate narratives in television shows and movies can help shift attitudes on climate change, a new study finds! "Over a thousand participants were recruited, and researchers divided them into two groups. Half watched a climate-focused episode of Madam Secretary about a super typhoon menacing the Pacific Island nation of Nauru. The other half watched another episode of the same show about U.S. involvement in the Middle East. "People who watched the climate episode experienced “a substantial increase” in their level of concern about climate change and their support for government action. Researchers found this change persisted even two weeks after people watched the episode." "Good Energy (started by my friend Anna Jane Joyner) has a simple test for movies and TV shows to see if they’re talking about climate change. First, does climate change exist in the story world? And second, is a character aware of it? For a long time, the answer was usually “no” – but that’s changing now. The fifth-annual Hollywood Climate Summit wrapped up this week, where creators of all stripes came together to talk about how to best include climate in their plot lines. Just like climate change touches everything in our world, I’m convinced every story can have a climate element to it – and it’s good news to see that this is becoming more common and that it can make a difference." Through our work, we have seen documentary film create movements time and again and know amazing things are possible. Glad to see more attention being given to climate related stories in Hollywood and looking forward to hearing more about the Hollywood Climate Summit from one of our board members Chiko Scozzafava who attended. #climatestories

🌱Plants communicating with each other caught on camera for the first time ever 🌱 Have you ever wondered if plants can talk to each other? This groundbreaking research from Japan shows that plants not only communicate but also protect each other in ways we never imagined. Led by molecular biologist Masatsugu Toyota from Saitama University, this research challenges the old view of plants as passive beings. Published in Nature Communications, the study shows undamaged plants responding to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by their damaged neighbors. These VOCs act as distress signals, prompting nearby plants to kickstart their defense mechanisms. The research team, including PhD student Yuri Uratani and post-doctoral researcher Takuya Wura, watched as genetically engineered Arabidopsis thaliana plants reacted to VOCs from damaged leaves, shedding light on the hidden network of plant communication. By looking deeper into the world of botanical interactions, the study uncovers complex defense strategies among plants. As we learn more about these plant interactions, we see a world where every living thing plays a part in the health of our ecosystems — opening up new possibilities for agriculture, ecology, and how we understand the interconnectedness of life. 🎥 Video courtesy of Masatsugu Toyota/ Saitama University

Could our perception of nonprofits be upside-down? Has the real power of charity's been misunderstood and undermined? Looking forward to watching “Uncharitable” hosted by Deb Jarrett in support of Dharamsala Animal Rescue Based on the book, “Uncharitable,” by Dan Pallotta, the film follows the stories of four iconic American charitable efforts that were crippled or destroyed by old ideas. Step-by-step, and with a chorus of leading voices in the field, the movie shows how charity’s real power has been misunderstood and undermined by anachronistic ideas about frugality and deprivation and takes the viewer on a journey from sach-cloth and ashes to a place where unleashed, charities can play the leading role in creating an unimaginably beautiful world that works for everyone. https://lnkd.in/gDvhEbhd

What is regenerative agriculture and could it be the key to unlocking many of our global challenges? Can we create a nutrient dense food system that supports the health of people and planet? Can we address environmental degradation while stabilizing the climate? The new film Common Ground (Movie) answers these questions and many more. To amplify the film’s message and take a deeper dive into the regenerative movement, we invited a diverse cross-section of visionary leaders whose work is closely aligned with the themes in the film to discuss the film each from their perspective. The conversation connects the dots between critical issues and promising solutions. Key insights included the critical role of data in driving sustainable practices and markets - Ethan Soloviev at HowGood, the importance of nutrient-dense food systems - Tina Owens, Nutrient Density Alliance, the role of certifications in promoting sustainable farming - Elizabeth Whitlow, Regenerative Organic Alliance, and the economic and ecological benefits of holistic land management - Will Harris White Oak Pastures. Hosted by Thea La Grou at Films for the Planet Access additional educational resources and watch the speaker presentations to gain deeper insights into the regenerative movement and its impact on our planet and health.
