Amplifying and Supporting Marginalized and Historically Excluded Biologists and Researchers in the Natural Sciences

About us

Field Inclusive (FI) is a new nonprofit striving to provide tangible and actionable improvements in the natural resources by addressing social field safety issues related to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI). We seek to support all field biologists in the natural sciences through identifying and addressing field safety issues, developing field safety resources, and supporting marginalized researchers through financial aid and experiential learning opportunities. On the awareness side, FI offers consultations, speaking events, and workshops. On the advocacy side, we offer environmental education programs, as well as travel and research awards, and fellowship opportunities for minority individuals.

Field Inclusive CFO Lauren Pharr and Executive assistant Kayla Stukes spent four days in beautiful Cullowhee, NC at Western Carolina University attending the Cullowhee Native Plant Conference. We gave our social field safety workshop to about ~15 participants who were interested in learning to identify social field safety risks — particularly for marginalized and historically excluded individuals — and learning smart solutions on how to mitigate various scenarios for researchers who professionally work outdoors. • FI tabled throughout the conference and discussed our organization with interested individuals who stopped by. We were also able to amplify and give out some materials from our many partners such as Sphyrnas Organization, Wilson Ornithological Society, and Wake Audubon Society. • A great few days full of new connections, ideas, and appreciation from so many that our organization exists. Catch us as the next conference and come out to learn how you can create a safe and inclusive environment for ALL researchers who professionally work outdoors: -AFO-SCO-WOS; July 29-August 1st -AOS; Oct.1-5

‼️A New Study from NC State College of Natural Resources Researchers‼️: Do you identify as a Black LGBTQIA person in the United States? Do you participate in iNaturalist, eBird, HerpMapper, volunteer water quality monitoring, the GLOBE apps, or ANY participatory science project (citizen science/community science) where you go OUTDOORS to collect and share data about your environment? If so, are you interested in exploring your experiences in the participatory sciences? Do you want to share your experiences with others like you to help create safe and improved measures for protecting and affirming Black LGBTQIA individuals in the field? Are you interested in learning a technique that could empower actionable change in participatory science projects or other social justice initiatives? Researchers from North Carolina State University are inviting Black LGBTQIA individuals engaged in the participatory sciences to write about, discuss, analyze, and co-produce understandings of their individual experiences and how that links to the collective. • Visit the 🔗 in the ad to learn more and sign up: go.ncsu.edu/safety2

    • Image Description: a graphic recruiting for a research opportunity looking at mental health, nature, and participatory science as a Black LGBTQIA individual. At the bottom of the graphic depicts images of two black individuals sampling water, one Black individual smelling flowers, and one Black individual observing a butterfly with a pair of binoculars. Rainbow/Pride colors are depicted above each image.
