Hedy Lamarr may have been a beautiful and successful Hollywood actress, but she was also an empathetic and compassionate immigrant with a deep interest in science and engineering. Did you know that a male birth control drug was found 100% effective in trials? A male contraceptive that immobilizes sperm for 2 hours prevented pregnancy in mice and resulted in no adverse side effects! Full fertility returned 24 hours later. “This is, in the male contraceptive field, totally revolutionary,” says Jochen Buck at Cornell University. This is a breakthrough for men and women alike because it’s only taken as needed and doesn’t effect a person’s hormonal balance. “We need more [birth control] options, and men need an option so that the burden of contraception is not on females anymore,” says Melanie Balbach, Cornell University.

Historic moment for the #NHL! 🏒 Jessica Campbell will become the first woman to work on the bench of an NHL franchise after being hired by the Seattle Kraken as an assistant coach. With years of experience and a proven track record, Campbell’s addition to the Kraken’s coaching staff is a monumental step forward. Campbell began playing hockey as a child, playing with and against boys in her hometown of Rocanville, Saskatchewan, where girls hockey wasn’t even an option at the time. She went on to play at Cornell University, and professionally for Calgary and Malmo in Sweden. She was also part of the silver-medal winning Canada team at the 2015 IIHF Women’s World Championship.

File under: double standards 📂 A recent opinion piece questioned #TaylorSwift’s role model status and the backlash was… swift. This is a stark example of the double standards women endure. Her personal life choices, whether it’s whom she dates or her decision not to have children, aren’t grounds for judgment. Men aren’t held to these standards, so why should she be? It’s time to celebrate women for their achievements, not their adherence to outdated societal expectations. While it’s not news that double standards exist, gender double standards actually hurt both men and women. Everyone suffers when society has different expectations simply because of our gender. By continuing to publicly call out gender double standards, we’ll foster communities and workplaces that celebrate everyone for their accomplishments, ambitions, and more!

Presenting new, groundbreaking ideas can be intimidating. Standing behind your work, is imperative. Even though Cecilia Payne's professor eventually admitted that her theory was correct, he never drew attention to the fact that he once rejected it. Instead he published his own "version" of the theory, corroborating Payne's, and it caught on so well in the astronomical community credited him with the discovery. In her autobiography Payne leaves us with some advice: “I was to blame for not having pressed my point. I had given in to Authority when I believed I was right…I note it here as a warning to the young. If you are sure of your facts, you should defend your position.”
