About us
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York works within the Federal Reserve System and with other public and private sector institutions to foster the safety, soundness and vitality of our economic and financial systems. Some of its most critical functions include the implementation of monetary policy, supervision and regulation of depository institutions, international operations and financial services. The New York Fed oversees the Second Federal Reserve District, which includes New York State, the 12 northern counties of New Jersey, Fairfield County in Connecticut, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Though we serve the public interest in a geographically small area, the New York Fed is the largest Reserve Bank in terms of assets and volume of activity. We accomplish this with talented and innovative people working within a collaborative and inclusive culture. We welcome and invite engagement and discussion on our Linkedin page. In today's post, the second in a two-part series, the authors discuss the consequences of an aggressive policy response to inflation using a Heterogeneous Agent New Keynesian model. They find that when facing demand shocks, stabilizing inflation and real activity go hand in hand, with very large benefits for households at the bottom of the wealth distribution. Conversely, when facing supply shocks, stabilizing inflation makes real outcomes more volatile, especially for poorer households. https://nyfed.org/45RAPGv

In today's post, the first of a two-part series, the authors discuss the distributional effects of inflation and inflation stabilization through the lens of a Heterogeneous Agent New Keynesian model. They find that while inflation hurts everyone, it hurts the poor in particular. When the source of inflation is a supply shock, fighting inflation aggressively hurts the poor even more; however, the opposite is true for demand shocks. https://nyfed.org/3VQz5bO
