What an incredible week at Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site, Inc.! 🌟 Our Democracy for All event series brought together an all-star lineup of programs that sparked important conversations around democracy and justice. We kicked off by celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of our nation with Made By Us, followed by a powerful Constitution Day event with @AnnenbergClassroom. We explored critical issues like excessive punishment with @BrennanCenter, and hosted a moving screening of Sing Sing. We even dived into the Power of Participation with a thought-provoking TED Democracy event in collaboration with Visit Philadelphia. None of this would have been possible without our incredible partners: Committee of Seventy, Pennsylvania Prison Society, Juvenile Law Center, FAMM, @FreeLibraryPhiladelphia, and the Mayor's Office of Black Male Engagement. A huge thank you for your dedication to civic engagement and helping us create these vital discussions for the health of our democracy. In May 2024, Bonnie Hernandez was released from prison after surviving heinous staff sexual abuse. Four months later, in September 2024, she was testifying before the #SenateJudiciary Subcommittee on Crime (and taking selfies with #SenatorBooker). I met Bonnie in January 2024, when I took on her representation as part of FAMM's efforts to free survivors of staff sexual abuse from BOP. She is an extraordinary human, she is a mother, a grandmother, and a woman with immense strength and courage. The work that we are doing at FAMM is some of the most important work I have ever had the privilege to be part of. Here's to the hope for more support for survivors, safer prisons, and more freedom.
