👇 When we started "Decoding the Disinformation Playbook" project we didn't really know what to expect from our new partners. It was the first time we worked with the International Press Institute (IPI) and taz. What we found was a bunch of dedicated people, who took their job, but not themselves, very seriously. And that's important to us; we want to believe we're the same. Why not have fun at meetings? The stuff we talk about and work on is often tough, rough and unpleasant. You need people that can make light of any situation. That's where Javier Luque jumps in, as well as Helena Soares when she was with us, and Dumitrita Holdis now. The same goes for the taz team. ❤️ We've just learnt that our project has been extended for another year - thanks to funding from the European Media & Information Fund (EMIF). Year three is on! 🎉

The first reaction of the Croatian police was to treat both of the attacks as misdemeanors - even after all of the reactions and condemnations - they are still sticking to that. A person, a journalist, was attacked in her own home and the police is treating it as a misdemeanor that happened in a public space. Our homes are not public spaces, they are supposed to be our safe havens. We will support out journalist in all of the upcoming legal battles, we will not just let this pass. We thank you again for all of the support and solidarity that was shown to Melita and our newsroom. ❤️
The Media Freedom Rapid Response partners express deep concern about the physical attacks targeting Melita Vrsaljko, a journalist working for the Croatian fact-checking website Faktograf.hr and the Climate Portal. Vrsaljko was assaulted twice in the same week, in the street and at her home in Nadin due to her journalistic work. Our journalist Melita Vrsaljko was physically and violently attacked in her own home because she was doing her job. Less than 3 months ago Melita won "Velebitska degenija", the most relevant national award for environmental journalism in Croatia. This is the reality of doing great local journalism, and Faktograf - Association for the Informed Public will wholeheartedly support Melita in every way imaginable. "The facts are such that one journalist, without a single blemish in her career, was physically attacked twice by members of the same family during the performance of her journalistic work - precisely because she tried to do her job. The goal of both attacks was to prevent her from performing her journalistic work, that is, to intimidate and silence her, which the attackers, father and daughter, tried to do by inflicting physical injuries, threats, confiscation of work equipment and harassment with phone calls and messages. Although there are witnesses and video recordings, the police, as far as is now known, mischaracterized those attacks as offenses against public order and peace, in which the victim herself was allegedly equally involved. Considering the provisions of the Criminal Code and the fact that the police have not yet done what they could and should have done to protect the journalist Vrsaljko, I will submit reports and proposals for the prosecution of the perpetrators on her behalf, directly to the state attorney's office," says lawyer Vanja Jurić.
