There is a close relationship between housing and good health. That’s why our health system is tackling the need for safe, affordable housing head-on with Habitat for Humanity and their Carter Work Project.  All week long, teams and executive leadership from across Fairview Health Services are helping launch construction for The Heights, Twin Cities Habitat’s largest-ever development. The project is creating much-needed affordable housing for St. Paul’s East Side. As an event sponsor, we also provided onsite first aid to the volunteers. Thank you to every team member and volunteer who rolled up their sleeves to help make stable housing more accessible to our community. The work doesn’t stop here. Emily Merchant, CNP, a nurse practitioner, is passionate about educating her patients so they can achieve their goals. Merchant works in cardiac electrophysiology at M Health Fairview St. John's Hospital, treating patients with heart rhythm disorders including arrythmia's atrial fibrillation, cardiac arrest, and those with pacemakers. "Education is empowerment," she said. "I love helping patients understand their condition and make sure they leave the conversation with all their questions answered." And she doesn't do it alone. Collaboration and the support of her team has been an inspiration as she continues to learn and grow as a provider. "It is a privilege to be part of such a dedicated team and this is only the beginning of what we can accomplish.” Advanced Practice Providers include physician assistants, nurse practitioners, certified registered nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists, and certified nurse midwives. #NationalAPPWeek is our chance to celebrate everything they do for our patients and our teams. 👏

Two new adult outpatient mental health programs opening next to M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital are closing the gap between crisis and recovery.  Daily, structured care with our partial hospitalization program provides high-level support for those who don’t need the intensive support of an inpatient program. The intensive outpatient program offers the same high-level mental health care with flexibility for those with daily obligations including work and family. Both programs add to the already robust mental health treatment options in the southern and western suburbs of the Twin Cities. “With the opening of partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs, Southdale has truly become a hub for outpatient mental health services,” said Bhargavi Ghate, MSW, an M Health Fairview clinical social worker and system director of mental health and addiction clinical services. Nanette Vogel, RN, has made it her mission to empower and educate other nurses.  “I am greatly honored to have had the opportunity to work as an educator for over 20 years,” she said. “I love developing and sharing my knowledge with nurses.”  With a passion for obstetrics, Vogel oversees the education for over 700 perinatal nurses across M Health Fairview. Beyond education, Vogel emphasizes the importance of creating inclusive environments for all of our patients and employees, citing how events in 2020 impacted her greatly. “I have done much personal work to learn about how to be antiracist through reading, attending seminars, and volunteering.” Vogel currently serves as secretary – treasurer for the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), where she was inducted as a Fellow for her significant contributions to women’s and newborn’s health.  👏 Join us in celebrating Vogel for making a difference for our patients and her colleagues everyday!

"94% of patients with substance use disorder don’t get treatment, but many visit the ER. Our First Step program fills that gap, offering immediate help to those who need it most," said Dziwe Ntaba, MD, an emergency medicine physician with M Health Fairview. Since June 2023, a new pilot program at the M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical School has connected over 500 patients dealing with opioid use disorder to life-saving medication and resources. Providing care and expertise that other physicians trust speaks volumes. Which is why we are thrilled to announce that 300 M Health Fairview providers across 87 specialties were honored as “Top Doctors” this year by Minnesota Monthly Magazine.  👏 Every year, Minnesota Monthly asks Minnesota doctors who they would go to – or send a loved one to – for their own healthcare needs.  “I am incredibly proud of the physicians who have been recognized as Top Doctors by their peers and by Minnesota Monthly,” said Jaya Kumar, MD, chief medical director with Fairview Health Services. “We are truly fortunate to have such outstanding professionals representing our organization.”  Find out if your doctor made the list:  https://mhfv.care/3znsQVH

Shannon Olsen’s, RN, son Declan was two years old when a team of lifeguards saved him from drowning in a local pool. One of those lifeguards was Andrew Boelter. Olsen is the trauma program manager at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital. Boelter is now a third-year medical student with the University of Minnesota Medical School doing his rotations at Masonic. The two reconnected, purely by chance, during a recent department meeting at the hospital when Shannon was sharing her story to fellow staff and residents. “I kind of put two and two together and I knew exactly where I recognized her from,” Boelter said.  The accident had a profound impact on both of them. It fueled Olsen’s passion for trauma education, particularly about water safety, and creating protocols to improve outcomes for trauma patients.   “I don’t think I would be in this role if that had not happened,” she said. For Boelter, it inspired him to pursue a career in emergency medicine. “It was a such a huge moment for me. I was dead set on medicine after that,” he said. he said. Olsen shares her story to both educate and inspire our emergency care teams who treat trauma patients everyday. “I always tell them they have an opportunity to make sure a child goes home to their family. They have the skills and they are part of a critical process that can keep a family whole.” #EmergencyMedicine | #MedStudent

Since 2019, the 3M Open has given over $1.9 million to support the breakthrough patient care and therapeutic programming we provide patients and families across M Health Fairview.   Earlier this week, we honored this tremendous partnership with a special celebration at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital.  The event kicked-off with 3M Open volunteers packing LEGO kits for children and families staying in the hospital; a way to provide a meaningful activity for kids receiving treatment. Over the years, the donations have supported patient-centered programming at our children’s hospital, enhanced therapeutic spaces including the 3M Open Plaza, supported mental and behavioral health care, and driven initiatives that forward health equity in communities across Minnesota. None of this would be possible without the dedication and support of our community partners. On behalf of all our staff and leadership, we appreciate the contributions that help us improve the lives of our patients and their families. #GolfThatMatters | #3MOpen
