We are immensely grateful to our Founder, Paul Rice, for 26 years of visionary leadership. From 11 years working with coffee farmers in Nicaragua, to opening Fair Trade USA in a one-room office in an Oakland, CA warehouse in 1998, Paul's unique understanding of the needs of farmers and workers, as well as businesses, for true sustainable sourcing solutions has helped usher in a broad movement of conscious capitalism. We are excited to celebrate the launch of Paul's book in 2025 and continue sharing stories of the impact that we have helped unlock with our partners over all of these years. We are also looking forward to inviting everyone to get to know Felipe Arango who joined Fair Trade USA as our COO and now will serve as interim-CEO. Along with a stellar Leadership Team, Felipe will be leading us into our next chapter as we continue to deepen and expand the impact of Fair Trade Certified.

Founder & CEO at Fair Trade USA

My heart is full of gratitude and joy today as I share some exciting news. After 26 years at the helm of Fair Trade USA, I am stepping down as CEO. Felipe Arango, our rockstar Chief Operating Officer, is taking the reins as Interim CEO while the Board conducts a search. I will stay through the end of the year to support a smooth, successful transition. And in January I will join our Advisory Council and continue to stay engaged in support of the organization and its impact. You can see our public announcement here: https://lnkd.in/gXbYzbwh Founding and leading Fair Trade USA has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. What an honor to partner with so many passionate changemakers – farmers, workers, companies, philanthropists, NGOs, activists, and consumers – all inspired by the crazy notion that business can and must be a force for good. Together, we’ve built the Fair Trade movement in the United States from the ground up, generating extraordinary impact for farmers and workers around the world – to the tune of $1.2 billion of increased income for hardworking families in 50 countries. I am bursting with gratitude and admiration for our global community of stakeholders and all they’ve done collectively to make this impact possible. They are manifesting one of the greatest experiments in ethical sourcing and conscious capitalism in existence today. And we’re just getting started! This summer, I took a brief sabbatical to rest, reflect, and finish the manuscript of my new book, "Every Purchase Matters: How Fair Trade Farmers, Companies, and Consumers Are Changing the World", which is set to be published by Public Affairs in April 2025. The book gives voice to the movement’s main protagonists who share previously untold stories, insights, and lessons from our 26-year Fair Trade journey. My hope is that it will help elevate the ethical sourcing and conscious consumer movements and generate new momentum. So I plan to give my full attention in 2025 to promoting the book and movement-building. After that, I intend to explore new opportunities to create positive impact for farmers, workers, and the environment. Stay tuned! I have complete confidence in the future of Fair Trade USA. We’ve developed a strong culture, a talented and passionate team, and a fantastic leadership group. We’re making great progress with our technology and program transformation roadmap. And we’ve built a growing movement of companies, producers, consumers, and other stakeholders that are committed to social impact and environmental sustainability. I believe Fair Trade USA is well positioned for its next chapter of innovation, growth, and impact. And I know Felipe Arango, the Leadership Team, and our mission-driven staff will write that chapter brilliantly. With deep appreciation for the Fair Trade USA team, past and present, and all our supporters, I send my heartfelt thanks and love to you all.

With the school season in full swing, we want to highlight how Fair Trade Community Development Funds have empowered families to pursue education for themselves and their children. At Wholesum, the Fair Trade program channels valuable resources into farming communities, funding essential projects like scholarships, transportation, community centers, and school supplies. These initiatives provide immense support for families, helping them manage school-related expenses. Thanks to Fair Trade, many children have achieved college degrees, a goal that once seemed out of reach for some. Fair Trade not only makes these dreams attainable but also uplifts entire communities, fostering hope and a brighter future for all. With October, Fair Trade month, around the corner, we invite you to make a commitment to Fair Trade Certified products. By choosing Fair Trade, you help continue creating positive impact in farming communities across the world! We’re honored to share the story of Juan Luis Dorame Cota, a maintenance worker at Wholesum, and his two sons, Misael and Jairo. They will talk about the tangible impact the Fair Trade program has had on their lives, from access to education to expanded career opportunities, showing how these resources have transformed their futures. #fairtrade #education #impact

🎉 Congratulations to our Senior Manager of Standards, Alexandra Meckley Thomas, for winning Fair Trade USA's Colleague Recognition Award! Alex joined our team two years ago as a Standards Manager for Agriculture and now plays a critical role in overseeing all four of our standards – including our Factory Production, Capture Fisheries, and Trade Standards. Her journey is driven by a passion for supporting smallholder producers. When asked why she joined the team, she shared, “I saw Fair Trade USA as an amazing opportunity to take a more systematic approach to collaborating with a variety of stakeholders across the supply chain who are prioritizing market access and engaging with producers and workers to build resilient supply chains.” Alex’s approach is both compassionate and pragmatic, upholding the credibility and rigor of Fair Trade while being attuned to the unique challenges and context in which producers are implementing standards. Her skill, dedication, and collaborative spirit have been invaluable to our mission. Join us in celebrating her achievements and contributions to advancing the Fair Trade movement! 🌍 👏

Are lunchbox leftovers a thing in your home? In a recent study of 2,000 parents with school-aged children, one in five said their child's lunch is much more gourmet than they had as a kid, although they estimate that 21% of their child's lunch comes home uneaten. School lunches have evolved over the years and more parents are opting for healthier food options. That's why we created a grab-and-go snack that is not only convenient, but it's sweet and delicious. Ask your local grocer for our Cherubs To Go! Check out the story here: https://lnkd.in/gJJDjAFV

🌱 Update from the field: Fair Traders recently visited the Ingenio San Antonio mill in Nicaragua! In addition to meeting with the team that implements the Fair Trade Certified program, our colleagues hosted trainings for members of the Fair Trade Committee and the Social Engagement Team. It was a productive visit that gave us an invaluable opportunity to strengthen our commitment to supporting Certificate Holders. One of the highlights? 🏠 Meeting a beneficiary of a housing improvement project established with Fair Trade Community Development Funds. Witnessing the real-world impact of our collective efforts is inspiring and motivating!
