This fall marks 25 years of the Fair Labor Association. It’s a big anniversary—and it comes at a transformational time for human rights at work. The future of fair labor depends on how we respond today to new risks for workers, such as climate change, and rapid changes in the world of business and human rights, ranging from new mandatory due diligence regimes to advances in artificial intelligence. Amidst these shifts, one thing that hasn’t changed: we believe as strongly now as when we started that responsible business means fair working conditions are the standard, not the exception. We hope you’ll join us this year not only in celebrating all the progress that has been made since 1999, but also in looking forward and envisioning how best to build a #FairLaborFuture. So, we’ll ask you: in another quarter century, what should work look like? #FairLabor #BizHumanRights #ResponsibleBusiness #ClimateChange #ArtificialIntelligence

Putting fairness to work
About us
Fair Labor Association (FLA) promotes human rights at work. We are an international network of companies, universities, and civil society organizations collaborating to ensure that millions of people working at the world’s factories and farms are paid fairly and protected from risks to their health, safety, and well-being. We know that transparency and accountability are the foundations of responsible business and see a future where fair working conditions are the standard, not the exception. For more than 20 years, we have been creating solutions to the world’s most complex supply chain labor rights problems and advocating to give workers a voice in making factories and farms better places to work.

We recently released the fourth volume of the FLA Student Committee Journal. This year’s edition centers on social responsibility topics of the 21st century, covering everything from global child labor to NLRB’s interpretation of “protected concerted activity”. Sixteen members of the FLA Student Committee served as authors and peer editors, helping make the 2024 issue a reality. Thanks to Suparna Agrawal, Athena Garcia, Janet Gilbert, Gabriella Gooden, Zoe Kozlowski, Rena Lahn, Hannah Laurits, Nichole Lawrence, Sena Lee, Aditya Madupur, Cait McKee, Patrick Murray, Emma Romano, Noel Seo, Amina Shakeel, and Loren Steinberg for all their work. Something you may not know: the agriculture track for #FairLaborAccreditation is the only program in the world that reviews and verifies a company’s human rights due diligence systems at both the corporate AND field level. This dual aspect is crucial to strengthen working conditions in the agricultural tiers of companies’ global supply chains. Learn more about our robust, multi-year accreditation process and the companies that we currently work with—including Balsu Gıda, Durak Fındık San. ve Tic A.Ş, Nestlé, Nestlé Nespresso SA, ofi, Sabırlar Fındık, Voicevale Group, and Yavuz Gıda—on our website: https://lnkd.in/eX5Q3rEs

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Karamat Ali, a prominent labor rights advocate in Pakistan. Mr. Ali dedicated his life to fighting social injustice and improving workers' rights and working conditions. He was also a relentless supporter of regional peace in South Asia. As the founder of the Pakistan Institute of Labor Education and Research (PILER), Mr. Ali contributed greatly to improving labor conditions in Pakistan. Over the years, FLA had the privilege of working with Mr. Ali; he generously shared his knowledge and experience, providing invaluable feedback on protecting workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and addressing contract worker abuses in Pakistan. We send our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His contributions to the labor movement in Pakistan and to regional peace will be long remembered.

Late last week, the Fair Labor Association and the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) strongly urged the Cambodian government to ensure respect for civil society and immediately cancel its “national security” audit of NGO CENTRAL. The letter to senior officials reads in part, “Government and global buyers are sometimes challenged by what they perceive as misleading or inaccurate allegations made by NGOs. However, the overriding value of freedom of speech in ensuring a free civil society means that the appropriate response in such cases is to speak up and counter those claims, rather than to eliminate the ability of those we may disagree with to speak at all.” Read the full letter ⬇
