June is Fireworks Safety Month. The spectacular displays are a sight to behold, but when watching them, but sure to prioritize eye safety. Thousands of eye injuries occur each year due to fireworks, so we're passing along some tips to keep your eyes safe: - Wear Protective Eyewear: Always use safety glasses if you're handling fireworks or watching up close. - Keep a Safe Distance: Stay at least 500 feet away from where fireworks are being lit. - Supervise Children: Make sure children are at a safe distance and always supervised. - Avoid Sparklers: Sparklers burn at 1200°F and can cause severe eye injuries. The Cincinnati Eye Institute Foundation (CEIF) recently celebrated the opening of its inaugural optical center for patients who are non-insured or supported by Medicaid. This initiative is the first of its kind in Ohio and will serve residents who have previously experienced financial barriers to vision care services. CEIF is on a mission to ensure equitable access to quality eye care services for all individuals, regardless of insurance status or income restraints. The optical center represents a giant leap in fulfilling its mission of promoting eye health and vision wellness in the community. EyeCare Partners supported the optical center with a donation of eyeglass frames as part of our mission to advance eye care for patients everywhere. #ElevateEyeCare #OpticalCenter #Nonprofit #CEIFoundation #Cincinnati

In May 2024, Dr. Alex Cohen, a fellowship-trained cornea surgeon with Desert Vista Eye Specialists, traveled to the African Kingdom of Eswatini. His mission: To deliver sight-saving surgeries to patients of all ages through The Luke Commission, an organization that provides compassionate, comprehensive health care to the most isolated and underserved populations of southern Africa. During the week-long trip, Dr. Cohen and his colleague, Dr. Michael Waggoner, performed approximately 200 surgeries, including manual small incision cataract extraction, full thickness corneal transplantation, collagen cross linking, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries. Outside of the OR, the team saw and treated numerous patients with a variety of ophthalmic diseases, including vernal keratoconjunctivitis and climatic droplet keratopathy. The youngest patient they treated was 12 days old and the oldest was around 105. This was Dr. Cohen's sixth trip to the country, where he typically spends 12-14 hours a day in the operating room. He keeps returning because the need is high — and so is the reward. “Watching kids actually see for the first time almost brings you to tears,” he says. “This is what gives me joy, even when my back is killing me.” Check out the latest Doc2Doc Podcast to learn more about Dr. Cohen’s technique for treating cataracts in low-tech environments. https://lnkd.in/gMPhupAy #ElevateEyeCare #LukeCommission #Cataracts #podcast #CompassionateMedicine #EveryLastOne
