Fun Fact: Crest Oral B for Dental Professionals White Strips came from a collaboration between the garbage bag group and the oral group at Procter & Gamble. That’s just one of many jaw-dropping insights from my conversation with Shekhar Mitra, Ph.D. several weeks back. Where Glad trash bags put scent into micro bubbles to create scented trash bags… they had the idea to put whitening agents into the micro bubbles instead and put them in a strip that could stick on teeth. And you know what a home run that turned out to be. That’s probably one of the most mind-blowing examples of what can happen when you connect people or worlds you wouldn't normally expect to cross paths. That’s the power of diversity right there. You don’t get White Strips every time… But you’re DEFINITELY not going to get a blockbuster like that if everyone just stays in their lane. Something to consider when hiring, designing teams, and setting your company culture… #biotechnology #lifesciences #teambuilding #innovation

Just like I’d never say raising venture funding is right for everyone, I’m ALSO not telling everyone they need to put their life savings on the line to bootstrap a company. H3!! No. I’d never want to come across as being on some kind of bootstrapping soap box. I just want up-and-coming founders to understand that there ARE options, and the topic of raising VC funds gets plenty of airtime. Bootstrapping in life sciences? Less so. Understandably, because it’s kind of the road less traveled, along the road less traveled. There is no “one right way.” It’s just a “more you know” situation. IF bootstrapping is right for you? Do it. IF raising VC is right for you? Do it. If bootstrapping is right for you to start AND THEN raising venture funding becomes the right move? Do that. There are so many ways to build a successful biotech business. If you need inspiration, there are dozens of founder stories live on The Biotech Startups Podcast, with some really good advice on how to think about funding. Or email some people you admire, and ask about their journeys. There’s no one way to do things – the trick is finding the way that works best for you. #biotechnology #lifesciences #finance
