🔥Did you know the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games torch is made from 100% recycled steel scrap? Now, that’s a winner! ArcelorMittal France has created 2,000 of these torches to be carried by 10,000 torchbearers on their route to the Games in late July. And today, the torch relay is in #Strasbourg, home of the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights and the European Parliament – and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate Europe’s competitiveness than with this symbol of green industry and its potential. The European Steel Association (EUROFER)’s Director General Axel Eggert tells us more – watch below 👇 #StrongerWithEUSteel #Paris2024

#SteelMarket Outlook – Q4 2024 freshly released with forecasts as chilly as the season 🚨 🍂 Key Insights: 🔴 The overall situation looks gloomier than ever, driven by low steel demand, downturn in steel-using sectors, and persistently high import shares. These factors, combined with weak economic forecasts, rising geopolitical tensions, and higher energy costs for the EU compared to other major economic regions, are intensifying the downward trend observed in recent quarters. Main data from Q2 2024: apparent steel consumption fell by -1.3%, steel-using sectors’ output dropped by -2.1%, while import share rose to 28%. 🟡 This challenging combination has further worsened prospects for 2024. Apparent steel consumption is projected to see another recession and plunge by -1.8%. Steel-using sectors’ recession is expected to deepen, reaching -2.7%, due to declines in both the automotive and construction sectors. 🟢 Recovery is foreseen in 2025, but at a slower pace. A more modest rebound ( 3.8%) is anticipated for both apparent steel consumption and steel-using sectors’ output ( 1.6%). “Make #steel a key European issue. Organise a European Steel Summit. Act now before it is too late.” These were the words of MEP Terry Reintke of the European Greens during this morning’s European Parliament plenary debate on tackling the steel crisis. But we could have quoted any number of MEPs, regardless of nationality or political affiliation, all with the same message and sentiment. Why? Because steel matters to all of us - it's at the heart of Europe, a constant driver of prosperity, resilience and quality jobs. Steel is also the core of the clean technologies we need for our green transition. But there are a number of issues that are threatening our industry, over which MEPs raised concerns: 🌏 Global steel overcapacity 🇨🇳 Unfit EU Trade Defence Instruments to prevent unfair trade practices ⚡️ High EU energy prices 💶 Low demand for European green steel ♺ The export of European steel scrap 🟢 Issues with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism 🪫 Insufficient clean energy supply in Europe In the words of Marie-Pierre Vedrenne MEP, Renew Europe: “How much time do we need before we adopt robust measures? We need to act to protect our businesses, our jobs and our future." And in the words of Raphaël GLUCKSMANN MEP, Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament: “Are we going to let ourselves be beaten by unfair competition or are we going to react?” We couldn’t agree more. We count on the European Parliament, together with the European Commission and the EU Member States - Council of the European Union, to ensure that a robust European Steel Action Plan is put forward and implemented swiftly. It’s make-or-break time for the steel industry. “We need to move forward immediately. We have no time to waste.”- Susana Solís Pérez MEP, European People's Party. #StrongerWithEUSteel #SteelIndustry #EuropeanSteel 📸 © European Union 2024 - Source : EP
