The European Fact-Checking Standards Network stands in solidarity with our colleagues at Faktograf - Association for the Informed Public in Croatia and condemns the recent attack on journalist Melita Vrsaljko. While working on a documentary, Melita was physically attacked. This incident highlights an alarming trend of threats and harassment against fact-checkers worldwide. We must work to address this issue and protect fact-checkers. Read our full statement here: https://lnkd.in/daC8hhGm
Our journalist Melita Vrsaljko was physically and violently attacked in her own home because she was doing her job. Less than 3 months ago Melita won "Velebitska degenija", the most relevant national award for environmental journalism in Croatia. This is the reality of doing great local journalism, and Faktograf - Association for the Informed Public will wholeheartedly support Melita in every way imaginable. "The facts are such that one journalist, without a single blemish in her career, was physically attacked twice by members of the same family during the performance of her journalistic work - precisely because she tried to do her job. The goal of both attacks was to prevent her from performing her journalistic work, that is, to intimidate and silence her, which the attackers, father and daughter, tried to do by inflicting physical injuries, threats, confiscation of work equipment and harassment with phone calls and messages. Although there are witnesses and video recordings, the police, as far as is now known, mischaracterized those attacks as offenses against public order and peace, in which the victim herself was allegedly equally involved. Considering the provisions of the Criminal Code and the fact that the police have not yet done what they could and should have done to protect the journalist Vrsaljko, I will submit reports and proposals for the prosecution of the perpetrators on her behalf, directly to the state attorney's office," says lawyer Vanja Jurić.

We are pleased to announce our partnership with AFP, co-founder and verified member of the EFCSN, by which AFP provides other EFCSN members access to the AFP News platform at preferred conditions. A valuable tool for fact-checkers to access a body of real time, verified information and visual content, this partnership will support our members in their work. As EFCSN coordinator, Stephan Mündges, puts it: “This partnership will help fact-checkers across Europe to debunk claims faster and illustrate their fact-checks more easily”. New report from the Climate Facts Europe project: "Denialism in Italy, Spain and Greece stemming from drought, floods and forest fires: How conspiracy theories misrepresent extreme events to deny climate change" by Maldita.es, Facta and Ellinika Hoaxes It examines conspiracy theories that misrepresent extreme weather events and blame climate disasters on state institutions in Italy, Spain and Greece. In the context of extreme weather events already affecting Europe this summer, report author Maribel Ángel-Moreno said, “As climate change will boost extreme weather events, mis- and disinformation related to them will appear. Tracking them and the narratives they convey becomes extremely important, as some try to unlink these extreme phenomena to the changing climate." Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/dCqrwx3T
