⛈ How can we mitigate bad weather impacts on aviation ✈️? 👀 Watch our new #AllTogetherNow2024 video explaining why this is a 🔝 priority as we manage peak traffic this summer! Last year, there were 48% more en-route #ATFM air traffic flow management weather delays compared to 2022, creating more uncertainty and increasing delays and cross-border bottlenecks. 👉 To manage better peak traffic ✈️ this summer ☀️, the EUROCONTROL #NM Network Manager is collaborating closely with meteorological services to share weather data with ops actors, and help everyone in the network better anticipate forecasted adverse weather conditions. This will help mitigate those bad weather impacts on network traffic ✈️ by ensuring more reliable planning, and providing the network with greater consistency & stability. Improving adverse weather management is one of our 5️⃣ 🔝priorities for this summer that we are encouraging all aviation actors to focus on, as we prepare for busy summer traffic ☀️✈️ together. The other priorities include: ✈ prioritising first rotation ✈ delivering agreed capacities ✈ realistic schedules including turnaround times ✈ disciplined flight plan execution. The explainer videos come as part of the EUROCONTROL Network Manager's #ATN2024 All Together Now 2024 campaign to manage busy summer air traffic across the European aviation network. Central to the campaign is our hands-on All Together Now 2024 guide 📄 for flight dispatchers, #pilots, #ATCOs, #FMPs flow management positions and #airports: https://lnkd.in/e_YwidrG

📊 #DataSnapshot time! Our latest issue analyses the average flight in the EUROCONTROL area and the changes and trends over the last five years. 🔑 Key findings? ✈️ Flight distance has been growing since 2018 & the average flight in 2023 was 1,140 km, crossing 3.5 countries. This trend is, to some extent, driven by regional and domestic flights being substituted by alternative modes of transport such as high-speed rail services. ✈️ The fleet mix has changed with fewer turboprop aircraft operating and increased use of narrow-body aircraft offering greater range capabilities and higher cruising speeds. ✈️ With jet aircraft operating most efficiently at higher altitudes, the average flight climbed to flight level (FL) 350 in 2023 – around 35,000ft and some 500ft higher than in 2018. 👉 The latest #EuropeanAviationOverview, covering the period 15 to 21 July, shows that week 29 was particularly challenging for the Network, with very high delays as a result of convective weather and capacity/staffing, in addition to the impact of the CrowdStrike IT outage on Friday. Over the week: 📌 Network recorded 34,260 average daily flights (⬆️ 4% vs 2023 & ⬇️- 0.4% compared to the previous week's average) 📌 The last 3 days of the week recorded slightly fewer flights than the week before due to the global IT shutdown of 19 July 📌 Capacity/staffing was the leading cause of en-route delays (50%), followed by weather, which accounted for 42% The EUROCONTROL Network Manager continues to work intensively with all aviation stakeholders to manage the imbalance between the number of aircraft wanting to fly and the capacity that is available in the airspace, and at airports, with the aim of allowing passengers to get to their destinations safely and with the least possible delay. 🔗 More info on this & all network impacts in our latest #EuropeanAviationOverview available here: https://lnkd.in/e9YbFKrK

Datalink makes 👨✈️ 👩✈️ controller-pilot communications more efficient and is a key enabler to increase #aviation safety and capacity! To support air traffic this summer, the Datalink Performance Monitoring Group (DPMG) defined 6 key targets & the report on their progress is out now! The report shows real progress has been made! The deployment of new VDL2 frequencies and initiatives to mitigate GNSS interferences showcase the Datalink community's commitment to operational efficiency and safety. Our joint efforts to increase logon rates and ensure flight plan compliance have borne fruit. Eliminating repetitive uplink messages and optimizing the usage of good communication channels still need to be tackled. Our dedicated EUROCONTROL datalink programme team will continue to provide updates. 🔗 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eECku72e 👉 Contact our #TeamEUROCONTROL expert Ludovic Legros for more information: https://lnkd.in/eQYQBQb2

Reducing the use of aircraft engines during taxiing ✈ 🚕! Together with ACI EUROPE and operational and technical experts from across #aviation EUROCONTROL has produced a Concept of Operations (CONOPS) & Industry Guidance to save fuel and reduce emissions. The improvement of environmental performance of airports is without doubt one of the key 🌿 challenges of many, if not all, #airports. EUROCONTROL's Airport Operations Team (AOT) Sustainable Taxiing Taskforce – a forum of operational and technical stakeholders - has delivered a high-level CONOPS that includes recommendations and considerations for implementation of sustainable taxi operations. The CONOPS, based on a simplified model of taxi operations, demonstrates the environmental benefit potential to reduce fuel and emissions (in addition to improvement of Local Air Quality and noise at the apron), but also addresses possible operational improvements in operations with sustainable taxi solutions. The reduction-potential of noise, local air quality and emissions of sustainable taxiing solutions are very significant in comparison to other air traffic management related reductions. The analysis shows that emission reductions of up to 400 kg of CO2 are possible (standard LTO taxi-out times, A320 family). 💡 Sustainable taxiing solutions should be therefore seriously considered as part of the overall sustainability package of the aviation sector. Read the CONOPS to learn more about integrating technological enablers in operations and maximising environmental benefits and operational efficiency: https://lnkd.in/eKramsCv
