The harvesting of marine organisms for scientific research and analysis can have an impact on the environment, which is a challenge to sustainability that EUREMAP will address. Our project will implement open science practices to ensure all data complies with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles. By enabling cross-disciplinary research and experimental replication, the FAIRification of data will improve accessibility, contribute to dereplication and derisking, and expand the activities and services offered to support blue growth. #euremap #marinebioprospection #blueeconomy #EU_RIs EMBL | EU-OPENSCREEN | EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre | ELIXIR | UiT Norges arktiske universitet | Fundacion MEDINA | Universiteit Gent | Tel Aviv University | Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research | SINTEF | Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) | Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche | Sorbonne Université | European Research Executive Agency (REA) | Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn | CNRS

Natural products are produced by the metabolism of living organisms in response to external stimuli, for communication with the environment, competition and other roles in the ecosystem. Marine bioprospecting uses this for many applications, such as: • 𝐍𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐬: vitamins, enzymes, antioxidants and essential oils that can be used as natural additives in food. • 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐬: minerals, amino acids, proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, terpenoids, polyphenols and pigments that have potential in cosmetic formulations. • 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐬: antifungals and antibacterials can be developed into biopesticides and herbicides to replace traditional chemical products on the market. • 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: alternative approaches and solutions to reduce the impact of fish diseases in fish farms, as an alternative to antibiotics. In a collaborative effort, EUREMAP will benefit from the latest technological advances, improve the efficiency and effectiveness of marine bioprospecting, and leverage Europe's product discovery pipeline! #euremap #marinebioprospection #blueeconomy #EU_RIs EMBL | EU-OPENSCREEN | EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre | ELIXIR | UiT- The Arctic University of Norway | Fundacion MEDINA | Universiteit Gent | Tel Aviv University | Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research | SINTEF | Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) | Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche | Sorbonne Université | European Research Executive Agency (REA) | Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn | Centre national de la recherche scientifique

The marine environment is still largely unexplored, although interest in exploiting novel bioactive natural products has grown exponentially in recent decades. Many marine organisms are the source of medicine used for human health, for example: - Ascidians provide trabectedin ET-743 (Yondelis) is used to treat soft tissue sarcomas a type of tumour. - Actinobacterium provide salinosporamide that is used to treat multiple myeloma, a type of cancer. - Sponges are the source of eribulin (Halaven), which is indicated for metastatic breast cancer and liposarcoma. - Sea hare supplies Dolastatin, a potent anti-mitotic used as a treatment for various autoimmune conditions To support the increasing demand and competitiveness of marine natural products in the drug discovery field, our project will build a new pipeline across the collaborating European Research Infrastructures @EuOpenscreen, @EMBRC_EU, @EMBL and @ELIXIREurope. Stay tuned! There are three phases to bioprospecting: collection, scientific research and analysis, and commercialisation. EUREMAP brings together 4 European research infrastructures that will ensure that our service pipeline supports you from the beginning to the end of your marine biodiscovery activities: 1st ) EMBL and ELIXIR will be responsible for exploring the genomic content of organisms and explore bioprospecting using bioinformatics approaches. 2nd ) The EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre will provide access to organisms for systematic analysis. Together with EU-OPENSCREEN, they will conduct bioactivity profiling to understand the performance of molecules and their application in industry. The ability to test a wider range of bioassays will enhance the discovery of novel compounds, such as: - new human and animal medicines (anti-cancer, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant) - novel compounds with potential applications as cosmeceuticals, for aquaculture, anti-fouling and antibiofilm, among others. Currently, the number of compounds available for human drug development is limited. For this reason (and others), bioprospecting plays a dominant role in the discovery of leads for drug development. In addition, marine resources have become very promising as they are largely undiscovered and can provide chemical novelty and complexity that can be enhanced by scientists. That is where EUREMAP comes in. We aim to harness the existing strengths in marine bioprospecting in Europe and create a new pipeline that aligns and integrates the technical capacities of four major European Research Infrastructures EU-OPENSCREEN, EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre, EMBL and ELIXIR. Together, we will build a new European transnational service platform for marine natural product discovery and catalyse academic and industrial competitiveness! Bioprospecting is the exploration of natural sources for small molecules that could be developed into commercially valuable products for industry, including medicine, agriculture, aquaculture, bioremediation, cosmetics, and nanotechnology. To respond to the needs for novel molecules and activities from the broadest range of marine bioresources, EUREMAP will implement a unique and well-coordinated European and cutting-edge technology-based platform, bringing together the complementary expertise of EU-OPENSCREEN, EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre, EMBL and ELIXIR in chemical biology, drug discovery, marine biology, and data science. Our project aims to develop tools and technologies towards the sustainable exploitation and processing of marine resources, by optimizing and exploiting existing bioprospecting pipelines in the field. As Europe's Research Infrastructure Consortium for high-throughput screening platforms for biomedicine and medicinal chemistry, EU-OPENSCREEN (https://lnkd.in/gjAqQf7) paves the way for scaling up efforts for open access to breakthrough discoveries in the life sciences. Using the EU-OPENSCREEN infrastructure, the project coordinator UiT- The Arctic University of Norway and the partners Fundacion MEDINA, Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, SINTEF, and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche will align and create capabilities across the RIs for more efficient and sustainable biodiscovery from the Marine domain and offer early-stage testing of therapeutic candidate molecules for various industrial applications. Let’s unlock the potential of chemical biology for marine bioprospecting!

An intergovernmental organisation, ELIXIR (https://elixir-europe.org/) brings together life science resources across Europe, including databases, software tools, training materials, cloud storage and supercomputers. By taking data to the next level in life science research, ELIXIR helps researchers gain greater insight into how living organisms work. In our project, they are responsible for the bioinformatics resources and data management, and by joining forces with Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) and EMBL, they will leverage the understanding of how marine biomolecules can be used for industrial applications!
