  • Michael Cembalest of JPMorgan has stated that the retirement of nuclear, coal, and gas power plants will lead to power shortages in major U.S. cities, affecting both electricity and natural gas supplies. Cembalest's report references the National Electricity Reliability Corporation's (NERC) findings, which highlight a rapid increase in peak electricity demand. This surge is attributed to the growing reliance on electricity, the unreliability of new power sources, and an anticipated reduction in generation capacity by 7% by the year 2033. The importance of a robust and resilient power grid is increasingly recognized, especially in light of Wall Street's growing awareness of the potential impact of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) "Clean Power Plan 2.0." It should be the goal of the federal government to develop a broad-based strategy that aims to integrate energy resources instead of choosing winners and losers in the market. Significantly modifying U.S. power generation capacity, emphasizing an integrated approach that utilizes a diverse range of energy resources, is a more reliable and realistic strategy. This all-encompassing strategy is designed to enhance the stability and sustainability of the nation's power infrastructure.

NY and PA Insurance Defense Litigator / History Buff-alonian

84 years ago on September 1, 1939, Hitler invades Poland and WWII is officially under way. Within two days, the Nazis captured the Polish city of Bielsko, the home of 15 year old Gerda Weissmann. Weissmann’s family was thereafter relocated to a ghetto until 1942 when 18 year old Gerda was sent to labor camps and separated from her parents who she never saw again. In the final months of the war, she was one of 1,300 women forced on a death march through Eastern Europe. At the end of the 500 mile trek, only 300 of the prisoners survived to see Volary, Czechoslovakia where their SS guards abandoned them in a factory. In May 1945, Lieutenant Kurt Klein was the first American soldier to encounter Weissmann when the Allies were liberating Volary. Klein had escaped Germany in 1937, emigrated to Buffalo, NY, and was drafted into the Army in 1942. His parents were unable to leave Germany before the outbreak of the war and they ultimately perished in Auschwitz. After Weissmann introduced herself to Klein in German, she guided the Lieutenant to her fellow survivors who laid sick and dying on the factory floor. Klein recalled, “The girl who was my guide made sort of a sweeping gesture over this scene of devastation and said the following words: ‘Noble be man, merciful and good.’ And I could hardly believe that she was able to summon a poem by the German poet Goethe, which is called ‘The Divine’ at such a moment. And there was nothing she could have said that would have underscored the grim irony of the situation better than what she did.” A most unlikely love story was born. In August 1946, the couple married in Paris before settling in Buffalo. Gerda Weissmann Klein was a journalist for The Buffalo News for 17 years. Her autobiography ‘All But My Life’ (1957) was the basis of the documentary ‘One Survivor Remembers’ (1995). At the ceremony where the documentary won the 1995 Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject), Weissmann Klein said: “I have been in a place for six incredible years where winning meant a crust of bread and to live another day. Since the blessed day of my liberation I have asked the question, why am I here? I am no better. In my mind's eye I see those years and days and those who never lived to see the magic of a boring evening at home. On their behalf I wish to thank you for honoring their memory, and you cannot do it in any better way than when you return to your homes tonight to realize that each of you who know the joy of freedom are winners.” The Kleins moved to Arizona in 1985 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Kurt Klein died in 2002 at the age of 82. Gerda Weissmann Klein died in Phoenix on April 3, 2022. She was 97 years old.
