Director general Marjolijn Sonnema of Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport kicked-off the first live meeting of the work package on Member State engagement of EU-JAMRAI 2 with an inspiring quote: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. I believe that together, we will go fast and far.” The EU-wide joint action of EU-JAMRAI is aiming to make a healthier and more resilient future for us all. AMR is one of the biggest, complex, and fastest growing global public health threats. It affects the health of millions of people, the health of animals, plants, food and water, and economies. This threat is responsible for approximately 1.3 million deaths globally each year, of which 35,000 in the European Union. If left unaddressed, these numbers could escalate to an alarming 390,000 deaths annually in the EU by 2050. Through joint action, by working together and by standing together, we have a chance to tackle this serious threat. #Europe #AMR #AntibioticResistance European Commission

🌍 Bringing Europe closer to the youth: EU-JAMRAI 2 featured at the II fair “Get closer to Europe in the region of Murcia” 👩🎓October 18, the University of Murcia’s Faculty of Letters courtyard (Universidad de Murcia) transformed into a hub of opportunity and knowledge. The second edition of the fair “Get closer to Europe in the region of Murcia” drew over 500 attendees, primarily university students, high schoolers, and the general public, offering them hands-on information about European Union scholarships, mobility programs, and employment opportunities. 💡Among the highlights was the EU-JAMRAI 2 project, promoted by the International Biohealth Projects Office from the Foundation for Health Training and Research of the Region of Murcia (FFIS - IMIB) and the Murcian Health Service. Focused on raising awareness about #AMR through a One Health approach, EU-JAMRAI-2 inspired more than 100 visitors to learn about this topic and even create their own AMR Symbol to wear as a commitment to this cause. 🤝We are proud to see young people joining us in the challenge to reduce antimicrobial resistance. Together, we’re making strides toward a healthier, united future in Europe and beyond!

Through EU-JAMRAI we are working to strengthen access to important antibiotics with a vulnerable supply. I often hear that we “lose” antibiotics to resistance – yet this general statement is often misleading. Many older antibiotics are still effective, and countries want predictable access to them. For example, 10 European countries have stated that they want strengthened access to phenoxymethylpenicillin (penicillin v), initially marketed in 1948. 🔬Sometimes, important discoveries happen by chance. However, in critical situations like the growing resistance to antibiotics, we cannot rely on serendipity. It's essential to keep researching and to contribute individually. Naukas is one of the largest scientific outreach events held in Spain. Every year it brings together around 1000 people at the Palacio Euskalduna, one of the most outstanding auditoriums in Bilbao. ❤️🤍Our colleague Ana Tamayo, communication officer in EU-JAMRAI 2, participated in this year's edition with a captivating talk on the origin of Antimicrobial Resistance and the challenge posed to Global Health by the spread of multi-resistant bacteria. She also named the 1,000 attendees as Ambassadors of the AMR Symbol. 📺We have subtitled her talk, which is already available on the EU-JAMRAI YouTube channel!: https://lnkd.in/dtbr-ttc

💊 Antimicrobial Resistance: a global challenge, a call for innovation and access At the World Health Summit 2024, two important sessions focused on the growing threat of AMR. We would like to thank all the panelists and their organizations for their tireless efforts to reduce antimicrobial resistance worldwide. Their role as AMR Ambassadors, symbolized by proudly wearing the AMR Symbol, is a powerful testament to their commitment. Antibiotics are the cornerstone of modern medicine, enabling safe cancer treatments, organ transplants, childbirth, and countless other life-saving procedures. Yet, AMR is rapidly eroding the effectiveness of these drugs, putting vulnerable patients at grave risk. The urgency for R&D breakthroughs has never been greater. We need novel antibiotics to not only sustain modern healthcare but also reduce the burden on existing treatments. At this pivotal moment, public and private partnerships face a triple challenge: 1. Driving innovation to develop new, life-saving antibiotics and diagnostics 2. Ensuring equitable access to these essential treatments worldwide 3. Promoting stewardship to ensure responsible use and prevent misuse Investing in STEM education is critical to building the future workforce that will address AMR. Now, more than ever, real-world solutions in policy, funding, and cross-sector collaboration are essential to accelerate the discovery and global supply of innovative antibiotics. Let’s seize this opportunity to protect the progress of modern medicine and safeguard global health for future generations. Special thanks to Global AMR R&D Hub and CARB-X for helping us to bring the AMR Symbol to the World Health Summit 2024. #AMR #Antibiotics #Innovation #Healthcare #STEM #PublicHealth #R&D #Collaboration
