Happy Black Breastfeeding Week! 🥳 Black Breastfeeding Week was created in 2014 by a collective of Black leaders from the breastfeeding field and is celebrated annually from August 25-31. The observance was developed as a response to the high black infant mortality rate, the lack of diversity in the lactation field, and unique cultural barriers among Black women, and shines a light on efforts and initiatives that support breastfeeding among Black families. This year's theme is: Reclaiming our Narrative and centering our Stories for Breastfeeding Justice! We want to hear from our community. Today was EBB Day at the Love Bug Children's Closet!! We were able to serve 12 families and purchased $870 in essential baby items and hygiene products! This is the most families we have served in one day. 🤗 WOW, our hearts are so full, and we are so grateful to be able to do this work! WBW acknowledges the need to improve breastfeeding support to reduce inequalities that exist in our society with a special focus on breastfeeding in times of emergencies and crises. August is National Breastfeeding Month! At Equity Before Birth, our sponsorships allow families who choose to breastfeed, or chest feed the time, resources, and support to do so without the stress of financial barriers or lack of access. We believe a fed baby is a happy baby, and support our families' in whatever choice they make to feed their child! 🤱 The 2024 NBM theme, Nourish, Sustain, Thrive, will shine a light on why protecting, promoting, and supporting lactation is so important for the human life cycle, honor the incredible work that organizations are doing to make the world a little more friendly for new parents and families, and highlight how individuals, funders, and policymakers can contribute to a strong and sustainable lactation field. Our esteemed team member Carolina Ramirez co-facilitated a workshop alongside Sophie McMillian, Blue Cross NC, Maya Jackson, Mobilizing African American Mothers through Empowerment (MAAME, Inc.), and Joy Spencer, Equity Before Birth at Grantmakers In Health #GIHAC. A standing room only engaged in a two-hour open and honest dialogue exploring HOW funders and nonprofits can work together authentically, meaningfully, and hold each other accountable in ways that lead to equitable capacity building for community-led organizations. Session participants walked away with eight principles to consider and lean into when grounding equity and inclusion in their work. Equity Before Birth is launching the Liberated Birth Recovery Fund, an innovative program to support working families with access to paid leave when their employers do not provide it. Participating families will receive up to three months of paid leave assistance tailored to each family's needs. They'll also get 10 months of ongoing support around financial literacy, birth and reproductive justice, and holistic wellbeing to overcome the emotional challenges of system oppression. After graduating, participants can apply to become mentors, fostering a community of care and support. Applications for the first cohort are open through July. Please spread the word!

And when it comes to Reproductive Rights... Equity Before Birth will be at the forefront every time! 🙌 Yesterday, we had the opportunity to attend the Reproductive Rights Press Conference in Durham NC alongside Governor Roy Cooper and Senator Natalie Murdock. Our Executive Director, Joy Spencer, was honored to speak on the importance of continuing efforts to eliminate the Black Maternal Health crisis.
