Leadership programs are often designed within the confines of the hero narrative; a top-down notion of leadership that centers individualism. When Robert Wood Johnson Foundation polled our LinkedIn community over the summer, a strong majority of you shared that leadership in your organization is a top-down hierarchy, and less than 20% indicated leadership was collective. One of our partnerships with the Stanford Social Innovation Review over the past year culminated in “Recognizing Leadership in All Its Forms,” a series that explores the social sector’s ability to broaden the narrative of leadership to redistribute power.  “Leadership must be relational and anchored in the wisdom of communities—in their deep understanding of strengths, needs, and solutions,” writes Brian Carey Sims, founder of Jomoworks, LLC, in a piece Chris Peters, president of Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples, along with Heidi Khokhar and Freya Hendrickson of Rural Development Initiatives, Inc. also contributed to.
