How Will the New Methylene Chloride Rule Affect Labs? 🚫 In April 2024, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a rule that bans most uses of methylene chloride, also known as dichloromethane, to protect human health. The rule applies to manufacturing, processing, distribution, use, and disposal of methylene chloride for all consumer uses and most industrial and commercial uses, including home renovations and printing. ☠️ The US EPA determined that methylene chloride is acutely lethal, a neurotoxicant, and a likely human carcinogen. Exposure has been linked to cancer, harm to the central nervous system, and toxicity to the liver. 🔬 While the ban will allow for limited use in laboratories, they will be required to have a Workplace Chemical Protection Program (WCPP) in place. 🤝 Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and microplastics (MPs) sure seem like best buds! These two contaminant groups have monopolized the scientific news cycle in recent years, leaving many feeling inundated with the sheer volume of warnings about the deleterious effects of household and consumer products. 🫁 If it’s not in the air we breathe, it is in the things that we touch. 👕 If it’s not in our clothes, it is in our food. 📱 If it’s not found in the products and electronics we buy, it can be found in the waste products that are created in the manufacturing of those items. In our most recent issue of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘥 📰, Environmental Standards, Inc. Data Project Manager Mark Lybeer expounds on the abstract elements of risk and reward, the correlation between PFAS and MPs, and discusses how scientists who work in environmental chemistry 🧪 must always be on the lookout for the areas in chemistry that may need to be maximized or minimized to operate in the best interests of people and the planet 🌎: https://hubs.ly/Q02FPk7h0 #PFAS #microplastics #EnvironmentalContaminants #HouseholdProducts #ConsumerProducts #manufacturing #EnvironmentalChemistry

Click below to learn more about new Canadian regulations on #PFAS in biosolids:
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a new interim standard for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in biosolids used as agricultural fertilizers, using PFOS as a proxy, effective October 18, 2024. This measure ensures biosolids imported or sold in Canada contain less than 50 ppb of PFOS, protecting human health and the environment. Here are some key benefits: Prevent biosolids products that are heavily impacted by industrial PFAS inputs from being imported or sold as fertilizers in Canada. Provide a biosolids risk control measure that is protective of the environment and of the safety of food and feed crops grown in Canada. At least 92% of Canadian biosolids already meet the new requirements, minimizing disruption to waste-diversion efforts. 🔗 Learn more: https://hubs.ly/Q02CZsF60 #PFAS #Biosolids #CFIA #EnvironmentalSafety #PublicHealth
