⏰ At a moment when the stakes are truly existential, the status quo in environmental permitting (especially #NEPA!) is untenable—and a huge barrier to the speed and scale of effort we need to meet the country’s climate and infrastructure goals. Better #permittingtech can help change that. 💡 Learn more about how from Technology Director Jessica Mahr in Nextgov/FCW this week: https://lnkd.in/gNWadbED 👀 ICYMI: read our latest blog on the topic 👉 https://lnkd.in/gT2MwRNA

📣 As a changing climate and intensifying wildfires strain our forests and rangelands, land managers at the USDA Forest Service (and other agencies!) need the capacity to adapt to changing conditions. Innovative, data-driven tech must be a core tool in our toolbox if we're going to solve the wildland fire crisis. 🏛 That's why we were so excited to have our own Reed Van Beveren join yesterday's Hill briefing hosted by Federation of American Scientists on innovation in #firetech.
Yesterday, we were on the Hill to talk about how our technology, tools, workforce, and federal capacities will need to adapt to the changing wildland fire crisis. A huge thank you to our speakers from across policy, industry, and research: 💹 Bill Clerico, Founder & Managing Partner, Convective Capital 🌲 Scott Conway, Co-Founder & Chief Resilience Officer, Vibrant Planet 🚨 Rachael Brady, Deputy Director of Research for ALERTCalifornia, UC San Diego 🏛 Reed Van Beveren, Technology Policy and Research Lead, Environmental Policy Innovation Center And thanks again to Matt W. from Megafire Action and our own Erica Goldman for opening the conversation with curiosity, hope, and some pretty good questions. #sciencepolicy #wildfire

📣 The White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) just delivered it's report on how technology can help accelerate #environmentalpermitting. Every day we see examples of how established emerging tech can lead the way to better permitting outcomes—for the government, projects, and our communities. It's time to take up this once-in-a-generation opportunity for permitting innovation. 💡 Check out our blog on key take-aways from the report ⤵ https://lnkd.in/gT2MwRNA

📣 At a moment when the stakes for delivering on new infrastructure for #climateresilience, #restoration work, and the #cleanenergy transition are existential, the status quo in federal permitting is untenable—and a major barrier to the speed and scale of effort we need to meet the moment. 💡 Better, user-centered technology in the hands of environmental permitting staff (especially #NEPA planners!) can change that. That's why we're working with our partners at the Federation of American Scientists to take advantage of this once-in-a-generation opportunity to fix permitting. This blog on #permittingtech plays using #AI kicks off a new series where we'll sketch the ideas—and concrete solutions—we think should be at the heart of permitting innovation in the months ahead. Phil Cork explores how we can more equitably and effectively expand access to clean drinking water by adding a unique ID to Drinking Water State Revolving Funds (DWSRF) data. Read the blog to learn more about how this addition could transform our ability to track drinking water infrastructure investments. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/enuS4Gqm

🗓 Mark your calendars for July 9th! We're hosting a webinar celebrating the release of US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s milestone Community Water System Service Area Boundaries Map: https://lnkd.in/efd-8xDZ 🎉 This dataset is a huge achievement—and will be pivotal for policymakers, communities, advocates, and countless others as they prioritize track drinking water investments over time, including in environmental justice, resilience planning, and much more. #waterdata #drinkingwaterjustice #environmentaljustice #waterequity ➡ Register here: https://lnkd.in/gpQYZveu ⬅
📣 For the first time, we have a dataset from US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on who gets drinking water from whom!! Join me on July 9th with the creators of the data to discuss how it was created, how you can access it and the many different uses. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eSS9tX8P | Check out the data here: https://lnkd.in/ewkYbead Huge thanks to all that helped pave the way for us to get here Yolanda McDonald, Jess Joan Goddard, PhD, Kyle Onda, Ryan Shepherd, Rich Pauloo, PhD, Walker Grimshaw, Katy Hansen and many, many more! Bonus kudos to EPA: 👏 Innovative techniques: They used robust and strong machine learning models to create the data. 👏 Clear documentation access to data: Methods and data published via ArcGis GitHub! https://lnkd.in/euqC7knc | https://lnkd.in/eJxdX5_h 👏 Iterative Improvements: They are going to maintain this dataset over time to keep it up-to-date! 👏 Soliciting and integrating feedback: They have a place to give feedback for correcting data (and people on tap to actually update!). 👏 They didn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good: this dataset is not 100% comprehensive, but it does cover 99% of the population served by community water systems.

Did you guys know that the USDA is actually already buying environmental outcomes, like nitrogen reductions and carbon sequestration? Seven projects are doing so RIGHT NOW using RCPP's "performance-based payments". In my new paper, these intrepid innovators demonstrate the diversity of projects that are paying for outcomes. They differ in their goals, how they prove cost-effectiveness, and the challenges they faced—but all are varying their payment rates based on the amount of benefits generated by a best management practice. I sincerely hope that these case studies inspire YOU to submit an application to pay for results in your community. Don't hesitate to reach out if that sounds interesting to you. Huge thanks to Nina Gage, Adam Kiel and Daniel Yeoman, Ben Wickerham, Joe Campbell, and Cy Tongate for sharing the stories of their projects and for blazing a trail for the Department and the entire conservation movement! https://lnkd.in/eTWyKDi2
