A thorough and interesting overview from OR Manager on the Anesthesia workforce imbalance. A number of key items not addressed here. A. Horizontal expansion of underutilized OR's to retain volume B. Addition of hospital specialty services requiring anesthesia coverage of more than one FTE per day ( OB, Trauma, IR) C. Continued CMS reduction of anesthesia reimbursement D. Commercial insurance reluctance to reimburse anesthesia services by cancelling contracts, reducing contracted rates, non-payment for ASA modifiers. E. No Surprise Act and IDR process A combination of the above are helping to contribute to exponential growth of anesthesia subsidies.

Joseph Racanelli, MD is a board-certified, subspecialty-trained neuroradiologist with 25 years of clinical experience, including mammography and all aspects of women’s imaging. Dr. Racanelli has served as both an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Radiology at TOURO College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Chairman of Radiologic Associates PC, a 30-physician private practice radiology group in New York, for the last 10 years. This practice provides radiology services to several hospitals in upstate New York, as well as multiple outpatient facilities in the New York metropolitan area, Northern New Jersey, and Eastern Pennsylvania. He is also co-founder of West Hudson Imaging, a teleradiology service providing 24/7 radiology support, and Hudson Valley Imaging, an outpatient imaging practice with a women’s imaging suite encompassing 2 sites in Orange County, New York. Dr. Racanelli has been a radiology consultant with Enhance Healthcare since 2016. Dave and I met 38 years ago as first-year anesthesia residents at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Much has changed in anesthesia since the days of Ethrane, Pentothal, DTC, and earpieces attached to esophageal stethoscopes.
