Thank you, Yaritza Guillén, Stewardship Coordinator at NeighborSpace, for providing the STEM Scholars students with the invaluable opportunity to volunteer at La Huerta Roots and Rays Community Garden. Over the past month, the students maintained the garden, undertaking tasks such as garbage collection, weeding, mulching, watering, tree planting, and painting. Their dedication has not only enhanced the garden but has also contributed to Pilsen's environmental justice movement. Witnessing the transformation, community member Patricia Dominguez commented, "They have done such an amazing job, and they do it with a smile." community. Thank you, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for providing the STEM Scholars students with valuable experiences.#CommunityService #EnvironmentalJustice #Volunteering #STEMScholars

Last week, our STEM Scholar interns had an amazing opportunity to conduct a waste audit at the Student Center East building at the University of Illinois at Chicago. With the guidance of Elizabeth Bosarge, Zero Waste Program Director at the UIC Office of Sustainability, our students processed 259.5 pounds of waste, sorting it into plastics, landfill, paper, compost, metals, and glass. This hands-on experience helped them understand the significance of proper recycling practices and the impact of our consumer habits on the environment. The students were especially surprised by the complexities of plastic recycling and the diverse types of plastics used in products. We thank Liz for facilitating this valuable learning experience and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for making this summer activity possible. #WasteAudit #SustainabilityEducation #STEM

The Summer 2024 STEM Scholars Internship is officially underway, and our students are diving into the world of environmental conservation and injustice. Last week, our talented scholars had the opportunity to visit the Calumet Water Reclamation plant, where they gained valuable insights into the process of purifying water for safe consumption and usage. Stay tuned for more updates on their exciting journey this summer! Once again, Thank you, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for making this possible. #STEM #EnvironmentalConservation #InternshipExperience
