Shimere had her first encounter with the legal system at age 17. At age 27 she faced a pivotal moment being sentenced to 9 years in a Wisconsin state prison. Upon release, she was determined to make a positive change, but was faced with a harsh reality: the barrier of a criminal record. Shimere shares her experience that has led her to a deep sense of empathy and understanding that drives her work in our "Second Chance Stories" blog post. Just a short drive from Carbondale, into the beautiful country surrounding Shawnee National Forest, we had the opportunity to meet with Representative Patrick Windhorst in Metropolis, Illinois. The Illinois Coalition to End Permanent Punishments Team is hard at work down here in Southern Illinois, and we need your support. Our goal is to meet with all 177 legislators in the general assembly to advocate for fair and just policies that end permanent punishments for individuals who have served their time. We believe that everyone deserves a chance, to be Fully Free, and that individuals who have paid their debt to society should be able to reintegrate and contribute positively to our communities. By meeting with legislators and sharing our stories and experiences, we hope to make a powerful impact and bring about meaningful change. But we can't do it alone - we need your help. Whether it's through spreading awareness, contacting your own legislators, or joining us in our advocacy efforts, every little bit counts. Together, we can make a difference and create a more just and compassionate society for all.
