Today, we celebrate and pay tribute to the oldest branch of the United States military. Founded on June 14, 1775, the Army's Birthday marks the day the Second Continental Congress approved enlisting soldiers to serve the United Colonies. If the Army were a city, it would be the fourth largest in the U.S. We owe a debt of gratitude to the brave individuals who stand watch, ready to defend and protect our nation, friends, and allies. Happy Birthday, U.S. Army! Thank you for your service to our country. We honor you. Today, we honor and remember the brave men who, 80 years ago, took part in the Allied Invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Often referred to as D-Day (The Day), it was the largest sea, air and land invasion in history, with over 7,000 ships and more than 150,000 soldiers from twelve countries joining the battle by air and by sea. Our very own Executive Vice President, Erin Snyder’s grandfather, Technician Fifth Grade (TEC 5) William Joseph Theis, assigned to Company A 4th Engineer Combat Battalion, took part in the first wave of assault troops to hit the beaches of Normandy in the early hours of June 6th, 1944. He and his battalion cleared the Utah beach of mines and opened a road for other Infantry Regiments. Those in the first wave faced extremely heavy casualties, with survival rates varying significantly depending on which beach they landed. Within days, the engineers discovered why they were called “combat engineers” when they were assigned duty as infantry during the assault on Montebourge. During CPL Theis’s heroic military career, he participated in many campaigns, including Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland. He earned several medals during his service, including the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, The Army of Occupation of Germany Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with One Bronze Service Arrowhead. At the age of 18, William was selected to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers as a shortstop but elected to join his father in the family business. When World War II broke out, he felt the call to duty, joined the Army, and served in the 4th Engineering Combat Battalion. After returning from his many World War II campaigns, CPL Theis served many years as a Brooklyn firefighter. We honor his service to our country and his community. Mr. Theis died on November 26, 1981, at the James A Haley Veterans Hospital, Tampa, Florida. EM Key dedicates this post to our founder’s grandfather, CPL William Joseph Theis, a special hero who was part of the first wave. His bravery, along with the bravery of countless others, ensured the liberation of Europe and shaped the world we live in today. We also take a moment to recognize the Allied forces' incredible bravery and sacrifice on this historic day. We humbly commemorate the courage of those who stormed the beaches of Normandy, many thousands making the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom. Let us never forget their heroism. #EMKS #SDVOSB #DDayRemembrance #NeverForget #HeroicSacrifice #WeHonorThem #ThankYouForYourService #EMKeySolutions
