Meet Maureen “Moe” Duda. She is a dedicated department assistant at Elliot Breast Imaging who has been a cornerstone of the team for an impressive 19 years. Moe plays a crucial role in supporting our mammography technologists and radiologists, ensuring smooth patient care from the moment they step into the clinic. Moe's diligent work keeps the department welcoming, organized, and efficient. One of her coworkers says, “Moe is the mayor of River’s Edge. She’s always willing to help anyone and knows who to go to if she’s unable to assist herself.” Moe's journey with Elliot Health System began when she was looking for a new career path after 18 years in banking and was inspired by her daughter's work in the radiology department. Her love for people and the joy she finds in her daily tasks have kept her with us ever since. Outside of work, Gramma Moe is a loving foster grandmother to many kids in the foster care system. She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends, exploring new restaurants, and walking along the beach. Her passion for her job and her team is evident, as she looks forward to each day and plans to keep contributing as a volunteer upon retirement. Thank you, Moe, for your dedication and the positive impact you make every day.

In the spring of 2023, Jack McKenna’s family began to notice small changes in his behavior and eating habits that raised some red flags. After completely losing his appetite and undergoing many tests, Jack was admitted to Elliot Hospital, where it was determined that he had Crohn’s Disease. Jack and his family were overwhelmed with information and grief but carried by the support of their family, friends, and medical team. Upon discharge, Jack shared that he was "a little sad to leave." Can you imagine being treated so well at the hospital that you were actually sad to leave? For the one-year anniversary of his diagnosis, Jack set a goal of donating $500 to the Elliot Hospital Child Life team. Child Life provides support services to pediatric patients across the hospital. Jack was determined that other kids have the same great experience that he had while being sick. Within two weeks, Jack tripled his goal and raised over $1,700! Since his diagnosis, Jack has turned 9, emceed his school's talent show, and joined the Destination Imagination team. He spends his days playing basketball, riding his bike with friends, hiking, and doing things most 9-year-olds love to do. My name is Sammy. I am the child life coordinator and one of the certified child life specialists at Elliot Hospital. A child life specialist plays a crucial role in a hospital setting in easing the anxiety and emotional strain that pediatric patients and their families experience. We use our expertise in child development and psychology to create a supportive and therapeutic environment. We employ various techniques, such as therapeutic play, educational activities, and emotional support, to help children understand and cope with medical procedures, diagnoses, and treatments. Child life specialists also help guide parents and caregivers, offering strategies to support their child's emotional well-being. Our presence in hospitals not only lessens the fear and confusion often associated with medical environments but also promotes a sense of normalcy and empowerment for young patients during their healthcare journey. I became a child life specialist because I always knew I wanted to work with children and help others. I considered pursuing a career as a teacher, nurse, or school counselor. Then, I found out about this amazing profession that combines the aspects I was interested in for all of those careers – a child life specialist! I was inspired to help others feel empowered during new/ challenging experiences by teaching them about coping strategies, pain management techniques, and opportunities for normalization/play in medical settings! I love it because when I’m able to sit down and engage in child-led medical play with a child, I am able to assess how a child is coping and understanding the world around them and the medical experiences they’ve overcome. Play opens a world of opportunity for me to gently educate children in an age-appropriate way, teach new coping strategies, allow children a sense of control, develop trust, and help children cope with challenging experiences. I love the moment when I see it all ‘click’ for a child, and they demonstrate mastery of a challenging situation through play. I’m incredibly grateful I get to do this important work!
