Elevate Government Affairs recently helped facilitate a roundtable discussion on mental health with a delegation of athletes including Robbie Russell (MLS Players Association), Chris Singleton and Drew Robinson (MLB Players Association), Derek Anderson (NBA Players Association), Marcus Smith II (NFL Players Association), Dr. Jay Harrison and Tom Wilson (NHL Players Association), and Mana Shim (former Portland Thorns player) and the House Mental Health Caucus Co-Chairs Reps. Grace F. Napolitano (D-CA), Don Beyer (D-VA), and Andrea Salinas (D-OR) and Senate Mental Health Caucus Co-Chair Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA), as well as Senator Laphonza Butler (D-CA). The former and current athletes shared their experiences and advocated for the importance of destigmatizing mental health, as well as offered ways to better reach young athletes. They additionally highlighted the essential role the Players Associations play in elevating mental health resources though the collective bargaining agreements. We look forward to participating in subsequent roundtables and continuing to help advocate for professional athletes and their mental health in Congress!
