The IGU SSEA Council meeting witnessed an insightful discussion among the Asian gas leaders. It also featured exceptional strategic discussions and regional collaboration between South, Southeast Asia regions and the African region. This discussion underscored the vital role that natural gas plays in the transition towards a clean and sustainable future. It also highlighted the importance of regional engagement in achieving this shared goal. During the meeting, Eng. Cav. Khaled Abubakr, Chairman of the Egyptian Gas Association, had an ideal opportunity to share the Egyptian Program for the IGU presidency election 2028-2031. The messages were clear : - Between South Asia , South East Asia and Africa ( populations are 2 billion, 0.7 billion and 1.2 billion respectively) live 50% of the world population - Energy is vital to fuel social and economical growth and stability, and Gas is the first choice - These regions together have the right to be a fundamental voice in the global decisions about Energy. A big thanks to the fantastic visionary Mr. Abdul Aziz Othman , the Chairman of Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) and his team, Mr. Khairulanwar Zakaria and Ms. Nabilah Z. for the fruitful discussion and their commitment to collaborative efforts. Highlights from International Gas Union "2024 World LNG Report" 🔸#LNG trade continued to rise in 2023, but at a slower pace (2.1%) compared to previous years. This growth connects #suppliers in 20 countries with buyers in 51 markets. The US came on the top of the LNG exporting destinations with a share of 21% of total exports. On the other hand, China became the 1st LNG importer, primarily getting its LNG from Australia and Qatar. 🔸#LNG became more affordable, After a year of #price swings, especially for Asian countries that value gas as a clean fuel. While new LNG production remained limited, the market rebalanced primarily due to changes in consumption patterns. Notably, traditional big buyers in Northeast Asia like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan reduced their LNG purchases. On the other hand, with prices returning to long-term averages, South Asian markets displayed increased demand for LNG, with some countries even making their first-ever LNG imports. 🔸#Decarbonizing LNG is a growing priority as the industry fights to clean up its emissions, especially during #liquefaction. Global liquefaction capacity grew to 483 MTPA by February 2024, due to a combined increase of 4.4 MTPA since the beginning of 2023. This increase is attributed to 3.8 MTPA added in 2023 and 0.6 MTPA from Tango FLNG in February 2024. 🔸#Europe is notably ramping up LNG imports, since the Russian-Ukraine conflict, by fast-tracking #regasification projects. This helps them get gas from diversified sources. Global regasification capacity reached 1,029.9 MTPA by the end of February 2024. This reflects an increase of 69.9 MTPA in regasification capacity added in 2023. #gas #LNG #trade #liquifaction #decarobonization #clean #sustainability #suppliers #regasification #terminals #ports Reham Gamal
