At NY Climate Week, I've had the chance to attend some great convenings related to clean energy. The focus on moving from policy to implementation has been inspiring, as has the focus on energy efficiency as the foundation of the energy transition. Efficiency is the unsung hero to many of us, and it has a mighty role to play going forward. New research from the International Energy Agency (IEA) that was presented yesterday at a workshop co-hosted by RMI lays this out: Doubling efficiency and tripling renewables globally gets us 2/3 of the way to meeting the Paris goals. And "energy efficiency improvements hold the greatest capacity for emissions reductions in the near term." Time to get moving! https://lnkd.in/eufdBD7e

This project makes a compelling case for LED supplemental lighting in greenhouse food production. It is my honor to support a woman-owned small business in Vermont making fresh produce accessible year-round. Read our Libra Design, LLC. case study to learn how collaborating with ERI, Efficiency Vermont, and the USDA helped this innovative lighting manufacturer serve a rural grower and accelerate the project payback period from six to two years. Are you thinking about applying for a REAP grant? Let's work together! #greenhouse #lighting #efficiency #grants #rebates #technology #controlledenvironmentagriculture #greenhousegrown #cucumber #lettuce #basil #engineering
Our work in action! We loved working with Finn & Roots and Holly Counter Beaver on this efficiency project, which included a solar array and a lighting retrofit with LEDs from Libra Design, LLC. We were able to source state and federal funding to cover half the project costs! 🙌 Their farm is now more efficient and climate resilient (very important for those Vermont winters!), and there will be productivity and quality benefits as well! 🥬 💡 ⚡ Check out the videos and more at the link here: https://buff.ly/3WYbc2I If you are interested in transforming your farm like Finn & Roots and seeing what kind of energy efficiency incentives and rebates are available, click here: https://buff.ly/3yTAyHa Gretchen Schimelpfenig, PE #CEA #ControlledEnvironmentAgriculture #IndoorFarm #Greenhouse #REAP #RegenerativeAgriculture #EnergySavings #EnergyEfficiency #Sustainability #Incentives #Rebates #Greenhouses #GreenhouseGrowers #LEDs #ProductivityBenefits #QualityBenefits #ClimateResiliency #ClimateChange #SolarArray #EnergyEngineering #EngineeringProject #EnergySavings #Operations #LEDLighting

Last week, Efficiency Vermont hosted its 13th annual Best Practices Exchange Conference. At this conference, commercial and industrial operators across the state gather and share expertise on energy-saving projects. We also award individuals and organizations Energy Leadership Awards. Read about our winners below. Innovation Award: Jay Peak Resort Jay Peak recently purchased an electric boiler to heat its hotel and indoor water park. This reduces its propane gas use by 331,637 gallons a year, cuts CO2 emissions by 2,380 tons annually, and saves $183,250 per year. Commitment Award: Magris Talc Magris Talc implemented a Strategic Energy Management program at its Ludlow Facility to reduce operating costs and energy use. The company identified 75 energy-saving measures that cut their electrical consumption by 5% - saving about $96,000 annually. Impact Award: AGAINST THE GRAIN GOURMET This gluten-free bakery invested in control systems to gain more insight into its energy-heavy refrigeration, which is essential to gluten-free baking. By creating a carefully tested defrosting schedule, they expect to use 20% less energy during key peak grid events, saving about $75,000 a year. Changemaker Award: Ray’s Market Ray’s Market in Irasburg upgraded its walk-in cooler and freezers to a more environmentally friendly refrigerant. This helps keep prices low for customers and saves Ray’s more than $21,000 a year. Energy Champion Award: Dean Ouellette from Middlebury College Dean Ouellette, the Energy and Technology Manager at Middlebury College, moved the college’s HVAC controls to an automatic model, which helps save energy by turning on (and off) when buildings aren’t actively in use. Additionally, Ouellette implemented other measures, such as switching to LED lights, which helped save the college $279,000 a year. Partner of the Year: Ravi Parikh of CED Twin State Electrical Supply Ravi Parikh provides custom lighting solutions for customers and has worked with EVT to create lighting programs and rebates. Ravi’s experience has helped save customers around 89,000 MWh over the last decade.

Each May, Vermonters make a difference with #GreenUpDay by cleaning up our communities. This year, Green Up Vermont crews didn’t just haul away 1.3 million pounds of litter, they set a Guinness World Records for the most pledges received for trash cleanup in 24 hours—6,833. Efficiency Vermont is proud to be a #GreenUp sponsor at today’s world record reception. Congrats to everyone at Green Up Vermont on the accomplishment! Other sponsors include WCAX-TV, New England Federal Credit Union (NEFCU), Darn Tough Vermont®, Lawson's Finest Liquids.
