Schools are not just collections of buildings; they are environments where learning thrives and students come together. Yet, when spaces within schools are disconnected, it creates a physical and emotional divide that can subtly affect how students experience education. In the 'before' image, the space between the intermediate school and the library is underutilized, with limited natural light and no real connection between the two buildings. This design left both students and teachers feeling isolated from the outdoor environment and each other. In the 'after' image, a simple yet effective change makes a world of difference. The new trellis and outdoor learning area bridge the gap, creating a vibrant space where students can interact, collaborate, and engage with nature. By incorporating large windows and open doors, natural light now fills the interior spaces, enhancing both the learning environment and the overall atmosphere. This transformation shows how even small design improvements can lead to a more connected, welcoming school experience that encourages collaboration, well-being, and deeper engagement with the surroundings. To explore more about how thoughtful school design can enhance student outcomes, check out our new book, Building Minds: Designing Learning Spaces for Connection and Coherence, published by A4LE-Association for Learning Environments. Are Our Schools Unwittingly Contributing to a Disconnect from Self? In today’s fast-paced world, many children are increasingly disconnected from their true selves. Schools, with their rigid schedules, uniform classrooms, and excessive focus on standardized testing, often deepen this disconnection without realizing it. Emotional disengagement, lack of personal space, and limited exposure to nature are just a few elements that prevent children from developing an authentic connection with their inner thoughts, emotions, and values. When children lose this connection, it manifests in ways we may not always recognize—depression, low self-esteem, compromised identity, and even physical health issues like chronic stress. The graphic below highlights how school environments, designed with good intentions, might inadvertently contribute to this growing disconnect. It’s time we reflect on how we can change this. To explore more about the paradox of disconnection and discover actionable ways physical and social school environments can help children reconnect with themselves, check out our new book "Building Minds: Designing Learning Spaces for Connection and Coherence". You can order it on Amazon (https://a.co/d/33LvPgB) or request a free PDF at [email protected]

We are incredibly grateful to Leo Thompson 🌱 (Edsplorer), a star educator and visionary leader, for taking the time to read and share his thoughtful review of Building Minds: Designing Learning Spaces for Connection and Coherence. This book isn't just for architects and educators—it’s for everyone. As the saying goes, "it takes a village to raise a child," and we believe that to truly help our children thrive, the entire community must come together. At a time when technology often dominates our lives, Building Minds aims to spark a new wave of “#becominghuman” —fostering #connection, #compassion, and #collaboration. We invite you all to join us in this mission of creating environments where children can grow and flourish. You can order your copy on Amazon (https://a.co/d/33kMz9d) , and if you're looking for a free PDF version, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected].
