This dynamic program focused on baby and infant care, personal care (including men's grooming), and private label health and personal care. Having attended now my 81st session, I can confidently say that the ECRM show excitement never fades. Events like these are where relationships are forged and strengthened through invaluable networking opportunities.     Independent retailers thrive when they sell products that aren't available anywhere else, and for Sarah Branton, OTC Category Buyer for Louisiana Wholesale Drug Co., Inc., her goal is to find these "hero" products and ensure that they fly off the shelves at the indie pharmacies they serve. LWD supplies 250 independent pharmacies across six states: Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. More than half of the pharmacists are shareholders, and LWD acts as a kind of Co-op and buying group, shipping to the stores five days a week from its DC in Lafayette, La. When Sarah joined just over a year ago, her goal was to strengthen the front-of-house at these pharmacies, with strong planograms, merchandising and by finding unique items that can set these stores apart, bring in new customers, and give them a reason to come back. That's where ECRM comes in. It's at ECRM Sessions where Sarah uncovers these hidden gems, which she then aggressively launches them with marketing, education, and partnerships with other local businesses. For example, she will have local travel agencies recommend CofixRx to travelers (to boost their immunity) and direct them toward a local LWD pharmacy to purchase it. And when they do, they typically stock up on other travel items as well. She arms these partners and store staff with "5 repeatable phrases" aimed at helping to move the product (see the video in the comments for details on this tactic).     With education and guidance from Recipe for Retail's Chevalo and Monique Wilsondebriano and buyer meetings at ECRM's recent Center Store Sessions, Danfo Gourmet Sauces is seeking to expand his flavorful sauces from the menu of its Philly restaurant to retail store shelves. Tosin Oluwatoye and his wife Abi Oluwatoye, PCHA own a popular restaurant in Philadelphia, and over the years they've noticed guests requesting larger and larger containers of their jerk sauce to take home. So they decided to bottle their sauce and take it to retail so that the masses can enjoy it at home. They joined the Recipe for Retail group about a year ago, and with guidance from Monique and Chevalo, learned the steps and made the connections necessary to get their Mild and Spicy sauces retail-ready. The next step was to get in front of buyers, and that's where ECRM came in. Recipe for Retail had a special pavilion at ECRM's Center Store Grocery Session last week in Vegas in which 17 of its member brands had private, pre-scheduled meetings with their category buyers from large retail chains. "The experience has been phenomenal," says Tosin. "You can't put a price on it. ECRM folds up what would normally take 12 months of effort into two days of meetings. We were able to understand how the retail buyers think and get direct feedback from them. We now have a line of sight into what they are looking for, and the online prep tools and follow up tools will help us beyond the session."     The 17 brands from the Recipe for Retail pavilion wrapped up their buyer meetings this afternoon at ECRM's Center Store Grocery Sessions. What an enthusiastic, passionate group of emerging brands, with innovative products and a ton of energy! We all loved watching them show their support for each other as they showcased their products and engaged the dozens of buyers from major retailers who made their way through the pavilion.     When it comes to functional beverages, there are CLAIMS, and there are CATEGORIES, and it's important for brands and retailers to know how each can reflect the growth of a particular product segment, according to NielsenIQ's Jordan Moore, who spoke at ECRM's Beverage Session in Vegas earlier today. Claims refer to the general areas addressed by the functional beverage, such as energy, metabolism, weight loss/gain, etc. Categories refer to the segment in which those beverages fit, such as sports drink, soft drink, sparkling water, etc. Growth or loss in one area does not necessarily reflect groth or loss in another. For example, while brain health beverage sales overall may be declining, those in kombucha may be growing. So it's important to determine where a particular product lies within the spectrum. And while some functional beverages may have many claims, you can't go too crazy putting them all on your packaging. Teo seems to be the sweet spot, according to Jordan.
