What soil best attracts pollinators, supports food and plant growth, and sustains healthy ecosystems? Judy Leak-Bowers' students at Langley Elementary School set out to answer this question. After analyzing soil from four different sources, they learned that sand and organic matter are essential for healthy soil. With their $800 Eco-Audit Grant, they'll create a composting system to nourish their soil quality. This will lead to more vegetables, better water filtration, enriched nutrients, and improved carbon dioxide capture and storage. Congratulations, we can't wait to see your garden thrive in District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). Together, #WeRise. #StudentInnovation #HealthySoil #Composting #SoilQuality #EnrichedNutrients

Austin and San Antonio high school students launched their Green Careers Academy Summer Internships with two days of personal and professional skill-building and learning before beginning work with their mentors! We learned mindfulness practices, undertook team-building exercises, discussed the UN's SDGs, and reflected on how we see local communities addressing climate justice when government falls short. We also identified workplace safety protocol and personal strengths and learned how to showcase these skills to potential employers effectively. Thank you to the City of Austin Office of Sustainability for supporting the Austin interns and to The Museum of Human Achievement for hosting! We are also grateful to the City of San Antonio Office of Sustainability and the HOLLOMON-PRICE FOUNDATION for supporting the San Antonio Interns and to the San Antonio River Foundation for hosting us! Youth Council alumna Leya Bustami was invited to join the working group for Austin Energy's Resource Generation Plan—a road map to help the utility reach 93% carbon-free power generation for Central Texas. As the group's youngest member, Leya reflected, "Despite our differing backgrounds, we all came together for our common interest in greening local energy. I am proud and thankful to be able to represent youth in energy and get our voices heard in important settings. I am looking forward to the next convening!" Thanks to Austin Energy for considering the thoughts of all community members in your strategic plan. Together, #WeRise. #EnergyEquity #SustainableEnergy #GreenEnergy #YouthLeadership #ActOnClimate

After a chemical spill from a nearby plant in Georgia caused a strong smell, John Cassell's students will be using their $750 Eco-Audit Grant to purchase air quality monitors so science classes at Effingham College and Career Academy can follow and document the local air quality. The data and insights they gather will be invaluable in raising awareness about air quality issues and guiding future sustainability efforts. Congratulations, EFFINGHAM COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT! What an amazing evening with truly astounding youth. EcoRise is doing the important work of empowering youth by igniting the spirit of innovation and opening the door for infinite discovery!
The largest group of student presenters in the history of EcoRise Showcases tapped into the creative energy of Duke Ellington School of the Arts last night. Young innovators from kindergarten to high school seniors buzzed with excitement as they shared their social impact projects with the community. We learned about #aquaponics, fighting #PlasticWaste, local #EnvironmentalJustice issues, growing food, and much more from presenters who represented Friendship Public Charter School and District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). This incredible night was made successful by our supporters! Gratitude to Teacher Ambassador Lauren Williams and Duke Ellington for hosting. Big shoutout to Teacher Ambassador Octavia Wolf for delivering inspiring opening remarks. Appreciation to Duke Ellington seniors Cire and Locke of Elemental Studios (@_elemental.studios on Instagram) for capturing the event and to MetLife Foundation volunteers for assisting with setup and cleanup. And special thanks to our partners, DCPS and Southwest Airlines, for supporting DMV students to be environmental changemakers this school year.
